Walked down my street the other day, and there were a bunch of picketers from the CWA union in front of the Verizon store. These are mostly the linemen and technicians. They've been on strike now for about two weeks. They're not on strike for higher pay--they're trying to fight against Verizon cutting their pensions and healthcare.
I think it's an interesting illustration of the fact that the taxes a company pays or doesn't pay has nothing to do with how they pay their workers. I could see how if Verizon were losing money then they might have a reason to cut labor costs, but in fact they are making billions of dollars in profits this year (I believe the figure I saw was roughly 10 billion). So cut all the taxes you want on Verizon, and increase their profit, but it has nothing to do with trickling down to workers paychecks. Verizon will continue to make the same calculation they always have--if cutting workers' pay increases their profits, then that is what they will do. The pay scale will be set by what the supply/demand of labor will allow, not the company's tax rate. BTW, is Verizon on strike nationally or is just here in NYC?

I am a Verizon customer. I have yet to have any of my service interrupted (yet).
Times are hard as we all know and very few companies, or people for that matter, want to take any kind of loss in profit or take-home pay. Verizon is most likely looking into the future and what they will have to pay out in pensions. There is even talk in Government to do away with the Military pension's in favor of a 401K type of program, resulting in less pay for our Men & Women in uniform and more money in the Government's piggy bank. Seems to make good business sense to me but not so good for the little guy. As far as healthcare? The wealthy will get what they want and the poor will get just enough. Iven

Evidently the Verizon strike affects outlets on the Eastern seaboard, down to Va. from NY.
I asked a picketer how business was--he said very few had gone in the store and many cars and passersby were expressing support. The store looked empty to me, except for some salespeople sitting around. More on the strike here: http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2011......ry_.html
