Changing the subject a bit and getting back to the show, I would like to ask Banacheck about the last performer. The female who blew everyone away reading the male journalist. I think she said there is a two year waiting list for an appointment with her.
I do not believe in psychics, not in a literal way but this woman was about the best I have seen, the journalist himself said there was no way she could have known the information. My only guess is he was in on it. Anyway Banachek, have you changed your point of view after seeing her performance at the end? Best, Decomp

Decomp, others and myself have pointed out time and again that all of that information was available on the ABC site no less. I am not sure people keep asking about that specific segment when it has been answered.
" http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/story?id=127805 This bio has all the info (on his own site) of the anchor who said he did believed because info could not be googled. Remember the rainbow on a Sunny rainy day. The last segment." Now, you have to ask yourself the same question you asked me?? Now luckily I found that info or you would keep saying she has to be real, even without all the facts. Until she performs under scientific conditions it is not a proven fact. Anecdotal evidence is just that.

Thanks Banachek, I need to watch the last segment again. Appreciate the link. He probably has changed his mind since the airing.
Best, Decomp

If mentalists, conversant in the art of deception believe in this tripe, then what chance has the average layperson. Long live the Jref, at least they are trying to do something about it. Perhaps stopping these mediums from praying on the vulnerable bereaved is more of a priority to them than making sure that the public believe that psychic entertainers are the real thing. Its the Silvia Brownes that are bad for the art, not the Randi's and Banacheks of the world. They are not doing what they are doing out of self interest. They are trying to make the world a better place.

I'm going to play devils advocate here with regards to mediumship...
what should we do for people, who, despite the love and support of those around them - and the offer/availability of therapy and counselling...just aren't interested? what if (regardless as to whether its real or not) - what if that gives them some kind of release and then they can start to move on? doesn't everyone deserve to be listened to? does being able to outwardly replicate something via other means therefore negate any other way of doing it? if I claim I can play the recorder with my right nostril, people claim I am cheating, so I put myself up for testing, if those people testing me then start prodding me with sticks, or insist I put cotton-wool up my nose before I start...doesnt that set me up for a fail before I even start? not aimed at anyone, not trying to provoke - just things that were on my mind after I read this thread...

"doesn't everybody deserve to be listened to" not if the person is outright lying and conning you. If these con men were not around, then these people would find other ways to deal with the grief and move on. Healthy ways.
As for the test, we usually work with the subjects to come up with something that works both for them and us. And it sounds like you are saying that to put it in a scientific situation calls for setting up for failure. Why, it works for everything else in the world. If you said you could play with your right nostril it would seem only fair to make sure you are not using your left.

On the flip side, I know of at least 2 psychics in my area that don't charge a cent... one of which a friend of mine goes to, usually on the anniversary of his mothers death, and benefits greatly from. The psychic argument is not black and white. If you believe in religion/spirituality, as I do, be it God, Buddha, Allah etc... then it would also be fair to say that you believe in heaven and the after life. Which would then suggest that you believe in spirits. If you are able to put faith in all of this.. without any real proof, in fact, partial scientific proof to the contrary, then why is it so far fetched to believe that it is actually possible to converse with the very spirits your faith insists actually exist? Maybe the JRFE should invest time proving that spirits don't exists at all? If they can achieve that... then they will, by default, debunk every single psychic on the planet... cause if there ain't no spirits.. psychics would have no one to talk to folks. Hmmmmm? |

The problem seems to be that they still go to that medium, they haven't moved on (just mentioning the name of the deceased gives them watery eyes and it's three or four years now) and it is a financial burden. Additionally the medium advocates alternative medicine (spirit healing, homoepathy and the like) which seems to affect their health in a bad way, but that's a whole other can of worms. But that's just an anecdote. What we need is a relative objective view on how people do (objectively) after a visit or visits to a medium. 2. Generally I would say yes, but if it's a liar or something like that, not necessarily. 3. No, at least not in a logical way. 4. That depends on you, I guess. Well, if you aren't happy with the test conditions ask the testers to try a different way. Such tests should always be agreed upon by both sides of the experiment. Though, you should be careful not to use special pleading, not many people like that.

A father, who had such a good brain in life now can't seem to remember if he's John, Joan or Janet! And he's back from the dead to tell you that there's something important about a teapot in the kitchen or some such meaningless drivel. It's awful. These mediums are not doing it to help people. They do it for money and their own ego. Selling their soul for a small piece of fame and fortune by preying on people at the most vulnerable time in their lives. That's not helping them. People should be left to cherish real memories of their loved ones. Real living memories of the times they shared, the times they enjoyed together. And know that, although they may have passed on, they'll always be here with them. Every time they look in the mirror or into their children's eyes, they live on. Their memory lives on, through us, the ones left behind. We were part of them and they are part of us. These so called Mediums take the precious memories of our dear departed and crap on them just to turn a trick. It's shameful and despicable and thank you Banachek for at least trying to do something about it. |

Just out of curiosity Sean what makes you believe you know whats best for others? I know a few people who have been going to these spiritual churches for years and years and it has done thwm no harm. If anything it gives them a focal point and its more like a relgeon to them.
Im not for mediums I think they are nuts. But at the same time some people do get something out of believing. I'm not crazy about Sylvia Brown and the other TV mob. But really I don't see it my duty to expose them. They don't need me or any magician as they do it themselves with their wrong predictions. But people still want them. That will never change. |

I think it would be more refreshing if some mentalists just told the truth. Its good easy money for old rope. Unless of course they donate ALL their fees to charity then I might consider they actually believe they are trying to save humanity.
