Everyone has been so forthcoming and helpful, I thought I would risk another question. What is your favorite bizarre effect? If you were forced to pick just one or two effects, what would yours be? I am awfully fond of shadow's seance with the rock. Simple, dependable, eerie. Yours?

Medi-evil prayer and wishing beads.
Which is one of my own routines that i am very proud of. You have a box of old beads and you get someone to think of one and make a wish and when you open the box all the beads are the same (as the one they chose) However the script is what makes it. |

For simulation of magick, Thrice Drawn Circle (from Invocation Magazine in 1989).
For a clean telepathy effect, Becker's Ultimate Flashback. For psychokinesis - Haunted Key ties with borrowed quarter flipping over in the spectator's hand (PK method). For precognition, Brainwave Deck - done as a straight prediction effect. For telepathy, name duplication (swami gimmick method). Hope this helps. Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

I have two routines, both of my own, though the underlying effects are borrowed from others, that I really love to perform.
One is a witch-finder trial in which the guest fails three tests and is proclaimed guilty of being a witch. I always offer to give them a chance at "appeal" by using the old drowning test, but they always seem to decline **sigh** The other is a much longer routine in which, using a voodoo ritual, the guest's future is changed from a long happy life to death. This is very dark and I must be very careful when, where, and for whom I perform it. I usually do it in association with my haunted attraction, where such things are more expected and easier to write off. Still, I have been told that it is more than a little disturbing... **Insert evil laugh here** Dave |

I have found great success with an effect from the Bizarre! tape from Andruzzi. I cannot remember the name of the effect, but you display a nail on a cloth and as it touches your fingers it burns with thick noxious smoke. My patter depends on the audience. The weirder the better. Restoration hardware used to have handmade nails. Torch em, grind em, abuse them and you have an ancient nail.
Anyways, enjoy. |

For strolling situations; Shriek of the Mutilated from the John Bannon video is extremely unsettling when you use a voodoo theme, borrow somebodys lighter; have a circle of people around you (you're all standing on a corner of nowhere in the mind joking and the unexpected happens).
I believe the Andruzzi Effect was called Coffin Nail |

Since most people are talking about effects they created, there are two Jack The Ripper effects I do that I happen to like a lot. They are simple but effective, and both use an English penny dated around the time when Jack The Ripper could've used it. They are also created to be used by women. (sorry guys) Besides my own stuff, I like the seance from Brother Shadow as well, and also his Ten Little Indians (which I'm still working on). From the Café I like Liam's The Mark Of The Devil which I have adapted to be a witch that grants wishes instead of the devil himself. I found that people don't like the devil much, and the witch works well for me.

Thank you for the mention Anabelle! Just don't tell anyone that I agreed to pay you cash for saying nice things! Lol Liam. |

"Predetermined" by Rick Maue is my favorite. When they realize the card they're holding in their hand - the card predicting their ultimate fate - is the Death card, they always jump!

The Ceremony of The Rock.
By far the best effect that isn't a trick. Mark

L&L or someone should produce a set of videos on bizarre magic. What do you think???

I think it's a good idea but I doubt they would do it, not enough of a market for them. Take a look at the number of people that visit the bizarre section of the Café compared to other rooms.
Someone should, but it won't be L&L. :comply:

To piggy back on what Brother Alexandre said, there is also the problem of people who pirate the tapes/CD, In was recently offer to go in on a deal, which went like this, "You buy the DVD, I will ripe it and burn you a copy of it in VCD formate, then you can sell it for about what you paid for it." After a rather long talk, this idea was killed in it's tracks. It is hard enough to find good tapes and material without people copying it and trading it. Now take a small group such as this, and you can see why, L and L may not want to produce a tape.
In the balloon community, they produce their own tapes and sell them (and none of them are getting rich just ask, John holmes (not that one he is dead), a rather good Christian balloon twister and it is expansive to do. I think it could be a nice market for one of use to make a tape and sell it--wasn't Doug working on something like that??. Anyway as long as people will make copies and there is such a small demand for it, it will more than likey not see the light of the full moon. Pitty really................ Rest |

I've tried on 3 separate occassions to put together a video of bizarre effects or members here and have failed to draw even a minimal interest.
Good Luck to anyone who tries again. Doug

I have not posted a meaningful post in the Café, since I left (not counting selling a item or two) Brother Doug's post brings me back to make a public offer.......
There is such a need for a good meaning full tape, for use and future bizarrist that, I would be willing to work with Doug and anyone who wishes to work on this project to produce such a tape! My idea is to work from an outline and ask people to sign up to perform the effect and video tape it, no explainations needed, just perform it. This would be a book/ video tape project, if you are interested in this, email me at: sirtwistalot@balloonhq.com If there is no interest in this project, then no one should complain about L and L not making bizarre magic tapes, lets step up to the plate and make one for us and see where it goes. Doug and Sir T,
I'd be really interested in a bizarre video project. I guess I missed Doug's original attempts to put this together but I willing to help out in anyway that I can. . .performing, production. Let me know. Mark

Sir T,
That was fast. I was about to tell you that I too was interested (just as I told Doug before). If you would not mind, I would be interested to know why it died such a quick and ignoble death. If it should rise from the grave, I may be interested. On a related note, we are considering taping all of our shows this halloween and editing them to produce about an hour and a half of bizarre performances (5 different performers). I suspect that we will be using them primarily as promotional material, but may be able to send out some copies if people are interested. (We may ask for shipping). I will post more after the season.
