This illusion is much more convincing when printed. This real world set up introduces a lot of confusion.

1) The set up makes it appear that the shadow is real. If the shadow is real the first tile should appear to be the same color as the second only when viewed in place while blocking out the other squares with a mask. Not when moved out of the shadow as she does. (think about it. to build this set up in real life with a real Shadow you would use a normal checkerboard)

2) If the shadow is not real but actually painted onto the squares the demonstration would work as shown. But it would be important to show people that the light was a fake that only appeared to be casting a shadow. They should have turned off the light to show it did not effect the shadow. Then move the cylinder which would weaken the illusion of different shades but probably not destroy it. Then move the first square near the second.

Perhaps there is a longer video where they show this.
