Doesn't matter if your skeptical about global warming or not, that read is good for a laugh.
It's amazing, people will criticize you for "biting the hand that feeds you," while they're busy praising the hand that beats them.

Hehe... I can see Alf just getting ****ed cause we didn't follow Gore. Could just imagine him trying to eat my cat because I forgot to recycle... NASA used to mean something. Oh well.

Typical gdw purposefully misleading bullhorn. It's not NASA saying this. It is a NASA affiliated scientist. NOT NASA.

Seems to me, Kodos and Kang might come to just the opposite conclusion: with the onset of global warming, the native population should be considerably reduced, and therefore not represent much of a threat to the rest of the universe.

I think them aliens could not really give a rat's arse what we do here...

Why would they really?

Or conveniently cook ourselves making us tasty treats.

How many votes for my theory that gdw hasn't even read the actual document in question. Anyone who does will immediately realize that the truth about this just isn't exciting enough to make news. But sure, take a purely hypothetical work, ascribe it to the wrong source (one more hate news worthy) and claim they are saying this is what will happen.

Tom, what the hell does this have to do with any kind of "agenda?" Get off your high horse.

Well going along with the topic here... First off, it would be a given that the aliens are more advanced than us, right? Therefore they would be more evolved than us. In a world and a universe evolving and ruled by the stronger and more intelligent, wouldn't it suggest that they would be making use of their own resources? Are we to assume they would be so noble as to care whether weaker or non-contributing species are eliminated in the first place? After all they are considering wiping us out, over our perceived threat or whatever. I mean wouldn't they care about the damage to the universal ecosystem if they were to interfere and eliminate an entire species on another planet??? I'm suddenly very confused.

A little source-checking is in order. gdw links and comments on a blog site that links and comments on an article in the Guardian, which comments on a published article. Got that?

The actual article is here.

The article abstract says:

Quote:
While humanity has not yet observed any extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI), contact with ETI remains possible. Contact could occur through a broad range of scenarios that have varying consequences for humanity. However, many discussions of this question assume that contact will follow a particular scenario that derives from the hopes and fears of the author. In this paper, we analyze a broad range of contact scenarios in terms of whether contact with ETI would benefit or harm humanity. This type of broad analysis can help us prepare for actual contact with ETI even if the details of contact do not fully resemble any specific scenario.

So what does the actual article say about greenhouse gases? The article makes two mentions.

Quote:
The thought of humanity being a threat to other civilizations may seem implausible given the likelihood of our technological inferiority relative to other civilizations. However, this inferiority may be a temporary phenomenon. Perhaps ETI observe our rapid and destructive expansion on Earth and become concerned of our civilizational trajectory. In light of the Sustainability Solution to the Fermi paradox, perhaps ETI believe that rapid expansion is threatening on a galactic scale. Rapidly (maximally) expansive civilizations may have a tendency to destroy other civilizations in the process, just as humanity has already destroyed many species on Earth. ETI that place intrinsic value on civilizations may ideally wish that our civilization changes its ways, so we can survive along with all the other civilizations. But if ETI doubt that our course can be changed, then they may seek to preemptively destroy our
civilization in order to protect other civilizations from us. A preemptive strike would be particularly likely in the early phases of our expansion because a civilization may become increasingly difficult to destroy as it continues to expand. Humanity may just now be entering the period in which its rapid civilizational expansion could be detected by an ETI because our expansion is changing the composition of Earth’s atmosphere (e.g. via greenhouse gas emissions), which therefore changes the spectral signature of Earth. While it is difficult to estimate the likelihood of this scenario, it should at a minimum give us pause as we evaluate our expansive tendencies.

And.

Quote:
Another recommendation is that humanity should avoid giving off the appearance of being a rapidly expansive civilization. If an ETI perceives humanity as such, then it may be inclined to attempt a preemptive strike against us so as to prevent us from growing into a threat to the ETI or others in the galaxy. Similarly, ecosystem-valuing universalist ETI may observe humanity’s ecological destructive tendencies and wipe humanity out in order to preserve the Earth system as a whole. These scenarios give us reason to limit our growth and reduce our impact on global ecosystems. It would be particularly important for us to limit our emissions of greenhouse gases, since atmospheric composition can be observed from other planets. We acknowledge that the pursuit of emissions reductions and other ecological projects may have much stronger justifications than those that derive from ETI encounter, but that does not render ETI encounter scenarios insignificant or irrelevant.

So, we model the Amish and hope the aliens never notice us or consider us a threat in any way! Sounds like a sequel to the movie "The Village". But thanks for the additional info, John.

Toms got it right, title a thread something that is just basically not true at all-but maybe that's why some of us continue to click on your stuff.. In this case, I cant comment on future links and their mistakes, it wasnt NASA...

To be fair the link to NASA was made both by The Guardian and in the blog in the OP. One of the authors of the study is a NASA scientist, but there is no indication that the article reports on NASA policy.

Who said anything about a "policy."

As for the rest, seriously, lighten up, I thought it was funny and would make for some interesting conversation.
