Hi Just got this to make a Hand of glory. My plans were to add candles to the finger tips. It is made of a hard rubber or vinyl. any tips on the procedure or pitfalls to avoid would be helpful.
Thanx to all in advance. |

Advice? Yes. Sell them to me now please. They look AWESOME!!!!!
Are you going to put them on the market? I'll buy one!! They are your creation, right? Exactly what advice were you looking for? Edit: Your entire post didn't show up before I posted. You could just sell them as they are or add some candle nubs to the finger tips. No experience with pitfalls, unless they were real Good luck!! |

Sadly, I am not the creator of this item. As for advice I am realy looking for common mistakes that others may have made when making their own.

It looks like anything but a real dried/mummified hand.

And just a reminder:
Quote:
The Hand of Glory is the dried and pickled hand of a man who has been hanged, often specified as being the left (Latin: sinister) hand, or else, if the man were hanged for murder, the hand that "did the deed." I should add that I agree with the relation main de gloire/mandragore, and the mandragore (mandrake root) is an herb linked to Hecate, goddess of witchcraft (Garlic too). This one is the property of my good friend Antoine: |

Interesting topic. I endorse everything written thus far. You may like to have a story to go with your 'hand'. Included are a couple of photographs of a 'Hand of Glory' made for me (to my specification) by the marvellous Doug Higley:

Id be tempted to soften black candles and wedge them between the fingers and drip wax down them and the hand .Lots of punters may not have heard of a "hand of glory" nor ever have actually seen one .Imagination and a good story is a large part of presenting gaffs to paying punters .

Next to the photos on this page is the 'story' of the Deadman's hand by KOTAH http://grindshow.com/grindshow/hand.html
It's a personal choice but prefer the Candle to either be 'held' (as in Leslie's photo or with the hand on it's back (like in my photos) and the candle in the Palm allowing for a more substantial candle. Nothing wrong with the finger tips, just a personal esthetic 'thing'. D

Cast an eye on these Hand of Glory images that a Google search produced: http://images.google.com/search?q=hand%2......tbm=isch .
Alter a Popeye's Rip'n Chick'n, which looks oddly like a deep fried hand. Your tongue must be placed firmly in your cheek to do this properly. Now, that's Bizarre for only $3.99.
Pleased to continue finding that all the world's a stage.

I was going to add, that I never use the term Hand Of Glory...mine is simply a Dead Man's Hand.

For the record (which the Café IS after all):
Sitting here thinking back (way back)...the way my Dead Man's Hand came about...the first Hand Of Glory I ever saw was a gaff by my friend Mark Frierson, with the candles on the finger tips. Sometime later, I was asked to do a man's hand, which would hold a Fan Of Cards (a deadman's hand) for a professional gambler/entertainer in Germany. Once photos of that showed up I was asked to make a Hand Of Glory (by Leslie IF I remember correctly??) and was not about to copy Mark's work or idea for it. Plus I did like the idea of a substantial candle being gripped, rather than the little ones on the tips of the fingers. So that's the story from my end. Then Kotah popped up and put some 'history' and creative writing to it. For absolute authenticity I would look to the Curator's opinions.

The hand that I asked Doug to make for me was based on the one described in the 'recipe' at the begining of the story on my website link in my earlier post.

The hand I have is a Dead Womans hand crafted by Doug Higley.
It is displayed in a wood frame glass panel box, On its palm rests a short black candle. Quite similar in appearence to the dead mans hand. It is one of my vizarre treasures. Kotah |
