So, in other words, you consider alternate points of view and constantly confront that possibility that your assumptions may be incorrect.

I hope you're well-compensated for what sounds like a unique skill set.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

That's an excellent summary.

I wouldn't say that it's unique, but it's rare.

I don't profess to be an expert at constructing nuclear power plants (or anything else for that matter), and if I did I'd probably be bounced out on my ear. I do profess to being an expert on risk; my job is to get the experts on constructing nuclear power plants to give me enough details about the process so that I can formulate the correct questions to get them to think of the risks. Then I use my experience in developing responses to risks to ask them questions to get them to come up with the response plans.

Today I interviewed two gentlemen about what we can do to avoid too large a plume from the cooling tower. It's complicated because nobody has defined exactly how large a plume is "too large". It was also complicated by the fact that these gentlemen are both Japanese and they admit that their English isn't as good as they'd like it to be. (It is, however, a darned sight better than my Japanese, which is nil.) Fortunately, the gentleman charged with risk management on the project (I'm simply the consultant helping him along) is fluent in English and Japanese. It was an interesting meeting.

Yes, I'm compensated quite well. I just wish that the office were in, say, Auburn, CA rather than Fort Mill, SC. Sigh.

We've only had one earthquake here that I can remember. It was very minor. No real shaking, just a little motion sickness like being on a boat and that was it. I wouldn't have known we'd had an earthquake at all if the news hadn't reported it.

Was driving to Philly from Toronto, and heard about it when we got to the Hamberg lecture.

Actually in NY now.

I find it odd that a natural disaster could reach NYC. Do they even have any trailer parks?

Obama just issued a statement. He blames Bush.

Yea he inherited the earthquake and it was much worse than he thought.

(I wish this was more of a joke and less of a reality LOL.)

Under 6.0 is not considered an earthquake, just a lil' shaker.

Just got a recorded phone call message from the city saying there would be a hurricane this weekend, and would I be willing to volunteer to work at a hurricane evacuation center.

First time I've ever heard of this being done. I don't know what to think.

It's probably because a hurricane hasn't directly hit New York for over a hundred years.

Just left the city last night. Streets were empty.

First the earthquake, now the hurricane, just waiting for Phelps and the like to blame this on ny legalizing gay marriage.

I think Michael Phelps has enough problems of his own what with all of the steroid allegations. But he seems to be handling it well. Smile

Actually, Ms. Bachman claimed it was God trying to get our attention to get on the ball about fiscal reform. She later said she was joking.

She was taught to love us in church. Her spiritual advisor said, God bless America.
