Never really understood the appeal of the game, but that's not what I'm writing about.

One day someone should do a study of the correlation between the hours a President spends playing golf, and the dire straits of the nation. It struck me that as the problems get worse during a President's tenure, they retreat into more golf. After thinking about this, I ran into this article:

Who was the first POTUS to play golf in office? I remember Ike did, anyone before him?

Dunno about golf, but Ike was also a heck of a bridge player.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

Churchill once described golf as a game in which "one tries to get a small, white ball into an even smaller hole, using weapons singularly unsuited to the task."

The following statistics mean little to me, but maybe a golf fan can interpret.

It means he was a pretty crappy golfer. Maybe a little better than your average weekend hacker. Pretty bad for the amount of golf he played actually. Here is the so called "Eisenhower Tree" at Augusta National. Eisenhower hit the tree so many times he petitioned to have it cut down.

According to the internets Teddy Roosevelt was the first sitting President to play golf.

It is believed that William H. Taft (27th POTUS) was the first to play while in office. Teddy Roosevelt could have been the first, since he dabbled with the game, but this is unconfirmed.

I've read many places that Lincoln had a powerful swing.

Comparisons are difficult. Not to make this about Bush and Obama, but because the article at your link is comparing the two, I would note that Bush spent time on more past-times than just golf (unlike, say, Obama who AFAIK does not have any other hobbies or a ranch to tend). Also, Bush reportedly gave up golf early in his Presidency ("I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal"). So while he was still golfing, he clearly teed off quite a bit less than he would have liked to (because of 9/11 and Iraq).

Don't know who the first POTUS to play golf is. But we could ask the same about other activities, like sailing, or hunting, etc. I imagine every President retreats into something to relieve the pressures of the Presidency (let's not get into JFK).

I have never got into the swing of it.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I have never understood the critical crap about golf, ranches or what not.

I mean if Obama is on vacation, and something happens just how far is he from a phone? Seriously in the age of information it does not seem the worst thing in the world.

I will concede he does seem to live the life of exess. He seems to, but who am I to judge? I think he does more damage at work when he actually signs bills and such, when he makes policy than when he golfs.
