A year ago my first grandson was born. Of course I just can't wait to show some magic to him. Just for fun I decided to show him some magic just to see if I could get a response. The one thing that worked well was a pair of Dlites. He seened to love it. You could follow his eyes and expresions and tell he was getting it. Well for 20 seconds or so. I know he is to young to understand the concept of magic but its fun.
Anybody have ideas of other effects that the youngest of children might be able to grasp?

I'd mostly use puppets and balloons for very young kids.....and of course, songs. Even new born babies are susceptible to the dulcet tones of a sweetly sung lullaby.
I know of a very amazing lady by the name of Lou Beckerman, who does the rounds of hospital wards, enchanting the newly-born, and the terminally ill, singing the most beautiful, yet enchantingly simple songs. http://www.loubeckerman.com/ Possibly one of the most unique and talented musicians I've ever met. ;) |

When I saw the title of this thread, my immediate reaction was, "D'Lites." Good to know you had success with those. You might also want to try a little squeaker concealed in your palm to make his toys or body parts squeak. You know, his hand squeaks when you squeeze it a little, and see if he tries to duplicate that.

Noise works best and if you use a tune they will soon follow the action. We found even 3month olds will follow puppets and music. But obviously only for a few minutes.

Back in my college days, I worked in the baby / infant laboratory.
Facial recognition studies(mom versus orange) and which colors/patterns got the most attention. Subjects were "lost" a lot, when they fell asleep, or needed to be changed. Post college, I find my baby puppet is fun around the older babies as well as ukulele and harmonica music. Harris
