A great ACAAN is Joe Barrys.
Magic is not the suspension of reality, but the expansion of possibility, inviting us to question the limits of what we believe to be true.

Hi magicianphiltay,
Do you have a video of Joe Barrys version. If not, what do you like about it? Greg |

I've seen a lot of "boring" tricks slay an audience when presented by a skilled performer using showmanship.
Leave it to magicians to argue "apples and oranges" minutiae. Really, who gives a crack. Did I read the whole thread? Nah, I prefer to avoid tedium. ACAAN? Yeah, it can be a killer trick in the right hands. |

I have just read through all(!) of this old thread.
I'm sure I read somewhere else that the whole point of ACAAN is its simplicity & purity. Spectators know that magicians have all sorts of tricky moves, even if they don't know what they actually are. So the whole point of (a good) ACAAN is it seems to remove all possibility of any "funny business". Therefore both the card and number must be freely selected rather than follow any procedure that could be influenced/forced. And the cards must not be touched by the performer (or at least perceived not to be). It is the simple but strict conditions that make it seem impossible. |

Agree with you Nikodemus, the performer should also be clear about what the effect is in their own mind. I do two vatients of this, one is presented as an eerie coincidence, which is really a silent nod to the audience that I've secretly been able to control the cards. The other is where I read the spectators mind and place the thought of card to their thought of number. Both are designed to appear very clean of sleights.

Here's an effect from my book Game Changer. I've given the classic ACAAN plot a complete makeover. Rather than a card simply appearing at a number, I've turned ACAAN into a gambling demonstration that shows you're a serious threat at the card table.

Bill Wisch's ICAAN (Impromptu Card at Any Number) is an incredibly deceptive effect. It utilizes the new Bill Wisch created "Flip Flam" move. Many said that move alone was worth the price of admission for the lecture and bought the "Killer Set" DVD for that move/routine alone! The DVD "Killer Set" is available at https://www.billwisch.com/store Below is one of the many reviews of ICAAN we received on the "Slydini Inspiration Tour 2019".
"Bill Wisch began his lecture with his incredibly deceptive Impromptu Any Card at Any Number, a variation of the famous card effect we are all so familiar with. This was one of the most deceptive ACAAN effects we had ever seen, and it truly plays as it sounds. Guest David Buss chose a playing card from a normal unprepared and shuffled deck, the card was shuffled into the deck and Ring Sergeant-at-Arms Laura Buss called out a number between five and forty five (the number thirty-three in this case). The cards were counted and dealt from the top of the deck, and, with no apparent sleight of hand or funny moves, the selected card was found at the thirty-third position! The simple misdirection required to perform this miracle has to be seen to be believed." - Dr. Dave Coll, IBM Ring 113, Jacksonville, FL |
