Blackstone Jr. had an Owen made one that was WRONG. I photographed him doing it at an "IT'S MAGIC" show and realized the vertical stripe on the right side when viewed from the audience was painted silver... which was wrong, it should have been black as it gave away the deceptive image.
I didn't know Harry at the time so I airmailed the photo to Harbin and suggested he contact Harry and Owen.

This sounds like a good artilce in the making. Im working on one about Tabman for Genii and this might be a good article on the history.
I just don't get why the current crop of magicians (not performers) don't want to read the books. What's the difference between finding out info in a book and a message board like this? You still need to read, and the books have step by step instructions (and more than one trick per DVD). Harry's was for sale a while back, Pete... I wanted to buy it but it got too high. Ive decided to retrofit my zig zag to the orginal harbin style. Did you sell your copy of the Harbin book? I think you told me you did. Coming to Fl anytime soon? We need to do lunch. |

Ricker, Pete,
You most likely are right re Mark Wilson - I am just going from memory - also Fantasio had a unique "slant" on the illusion, he had another tray on the stage left side of the illusion and initially started to slide the middle in that direction, then paused and went to the right. However his was done to music. MM |

Not to rock any boats, (or hijack the thread),
but I could never see the reasoning or value in Steinmeyer's "Modern Art" vis a vis the Harbin Zig Zag. It always struck me as "Zig Zag Lite".... with out any of the advantages. Was it just that some magicians who were probably performing some watered down version of the original Zig Zag, were searching for a novelty? Regards- JNeal

Here's Harry Blackstone, Jr. on a local New York talk show, "Celebrity Cabaret" back in 1977 doing (among other things) the Zig Zag:
http://youtu.be/kCh6rviB1CY Harry's performance is great - in the Harbin tradition, which is what "sells" it to the audience. Pete is right, however, the upright supports should be solid black, so the space goes away in the minds of the audience. Still, it obviously fooled the audience in this performance. |

And here's Mark Wilson doing the Zig Zag as a close-up trick. Shows how presentation is EVERYTHING!
http://youtu.be/vT-YdaHwmzE I think this was the first time the Zig Zag was performed on American TV. |

Marshal, didn't you have that small zig zag for sale a few years ago. Seems like I remember a video as well. I would love to see that again.

Yes we had on the market.
It was the 2nd one my father built for me when I was probably around 8-10 years old. You can see the video here: http://www.myspace.com/frncs/videos/video/9100922 on the side note I made prior about AH. They find a 1974 zig zag and a 1910 poster of Chung Ling Soo
