It's actually worth reading both Juan Tamariz and Bob Cassidy - their approaches and medium are quite different but their thinking is complimentary. You might want to read up on some of Whit Haydn's ideas ("Horns of the dilemma" - the idea that what they've just seen can't be magic, but there's no other explanation), or just check out Ye Olde Magick Blogge, since this month is "theory month" http://sleightly.com/blog/tag/theory |

I really enjoyed the event last night. I'm always surprised at how casual Cassidy's tone is...but how much I've learned when it's all done.
David PS It was ALSO refreshing to hear the word bulls*it applied properly...and frequently.

Thank you for your answer Lost in Thought!
Quite happy that both approaches are complimentary, this is indeed a subject that usually doesn't receive as much attention as it should. David |

This was the first of Cassidy’s seminars I’ve attended. I appreciated the semi-casual tone, almost like sitting around the kitchen table listening to one of the greats talking about whatever came to mind (he has a very active mind!!!) with Weber always feeding new questions and helping to guide the topic. A great combination.
One of the things Bob specified up front was that Logical Disconnect is not just misdirection or a false explanation. It is specifically targeted to eliminate whatever possible solutions could occur to an intelligent spectator who tried to backtrack or “deduce” the workings of an effect. This is much more than simply shuffling the cards to cover a stack. So many ideas, I’m going to be digesting for quite some time to come.
...what if I could read your mind?

Still recovering (here it was 02.00 AM, slept some three hours) I am appalled by the amount of stimuli received. Too many fundamental issues at a given time.. fantastic.
An expression (expressed or implied, I'll discover listening to the MP4) turns around in this poor head of mine: 'the limits of the possibility to create the illusion of ________'. This was far from being "only" mentalism. It bounded towards epistemological thinking. Thanks, Mr. Cassidy.

What I heard of it was great. Unfortunately it started at 1am in England and I'm not as young as I used to be! It was difficult to tear myself away from it and I'm looking forward to downloading and hearing the rest now. And it was an odd sensation, listening in live to Bob talking half way around the world!

Listening again the MP3, thanks for all your ideas and effort Bob.
For the interested, this is my tip: Buy EVERYTHING that Bob release, even if you don't like the blurb. You will learn sooner or later how Mentalism should be presented with his offerings.

Yes, it is available again because the package is now complete. The post teleseminar notes were completed and sent to Jheff late last night and those who attended the event have now received them. From here on those who purchase the set will receive the Logical Disconnect eBook, the mp3 of the live teleseminar, and the post notes in which I elaborate on my answers to questions submitted by those who "attended."
It was a lot of fun and I'd like to publicly thank Jheff for putting it together, Tony Blake for being a great tech man and, of course, my good friend Michael Weber for being an excellent host and the only person I know who reads my mind at the same time I am reading his. And special thanks to those who were in our largest world wide teleseminar audience ever. Good thoughts, Bob |

Do you feel like suggestion-based effects in the Jermay vain or TIA like stuff need a logical disconnect, Bob? If so, what type of logical disconnect would you personally use based in your character?
Some people hear voices.. Some see invisible people.. Others have no imagination whatsoever.

If the suggestions are too overt it is quite possible that a logically minded spectator could work out exactly what you are doing. Therefore, I would always sandwich suggestion based thought-reading between similar looking effects that are sure-fire and don't rely on suggestion at all.
If the suggestion and non/suggestion effects are fundamentally similar in appearance, each will serve as a logical disconnect for the other. (The Dr. Hooker theory as applied to mentalism) Good thoughts, Bob |
