Those of you in the South up to and including New York City (which is in fact "south" of me) take care of yourselves. This is going to be a nasty one.

Driving up from the Cape today, you could see hints of it coming in.
Looks like we're in for lots of water.

If you're on Long Island or lower Manhattan, get inland. Maybe they're overstating the strength of this storm, but do you want to bet your life on it?
(I have to wonder how many brain dead are going to go down to Easton's Beach on Aquidneck Island to watch it coming in.)

The surfers will be out there for sure.
There is no consensus yet but the official track has the eye going over Springfield with a cat. 1 storm surge in R.I (3 to 5 ft.).

That does it.
I'm leaving Charlotte tomorrow for Los Angeles. (I hope that that's far enough away.) |

Charlotte should be okay. Doesn't look like it's headed that far inland. My sister is in Charlotte. In North Carolina, people treat hurricanes the way we treat earthquakes here in SoCal.

Some of the nicest people I ever met on my travels were in Charlotte. Absolutely certifiably insane NASCAR fans, but extremely hospitable.

I'm not sure what you mean by insane NASCAR fans...they seem normal to me.

Well, now, being a born & bred Southern California boy, of course, I'm a football fan. I arrived in Charlotte for the first time one year just before the opening NFL weekend, and on that Sunday, I was having lunch in the Charlotte Brewing Company. Many big screen TVs on, mostly showing different games. As I was watching the Raiders, an enormous roar erupted from the far end of the place. Having gone through several football-less months, I got up and headed over to see what incredible play I had missed, which would undoubtedly be shown on instant replay. I didn't even care what team it was, I just wanted to see something spectacular.
What I found out, instead, was that Jeff Gordon had passed someone on lap-about-117 of a 200-lap race, to advance from 5th place to 4th, and I'm telling you, "the crowd went wild" doesn't even begin to say it. It was the Beatles in the USA for the first time all over again. Of course, this may seem perfectly normal to our North Carolina viewers...

North Carolina still IS my normal. I have been living in California now for many years, and I love SoCal, I love Los Angeles, and I love the climate here, but that doesn't make it right...

Good luck.
Will them eathquakes have made it even more dangerous by making things loose?

Yet another call from the city asking me to be a hurricane shelter volunteer! I am really having to think about this. They just allow you to respond yes or no, without any details about where, when, and what.

Good Luck everyone in the path and please prepare as well as you can. These things sometimes appear hyped up after the event but it's worth the effort to be prepared when there's any chance of them hitting. We seem to be minimising loss of life from cyclones here over recent years by taking every single one of the things seriously.

It seems to me that the powers that be have hyped it up and I wonder why. They are obviously again up to some conspiracy. Here comes a candle to light you to bed. Here comes a chopper to chop off your head!

I am about 45 minutes south of Charlotte. All we got was some wind and clouds. Now about 45 minutes northeast in Florence, SC they did get some rain, but not like what the Outer Banks was getting

I now have gotten a seventh call from the city asking me to volunteer for duty at a hurricane evacuation center. Interestingly, this one was a robocall from the NYC Chancellor of Education, saying that I would be compensated for my time.
They planned this badly; mass transit is shut down starting today, so there's no way to get to the evacuation center tomorrow. Though I have a car, it would clearly be foolish to be driving on the roads tomorrow. For this reason, I don't think they're going to get many people to take up their offer.

I feel bad for my friends because they are in the zones to evacuate. Im not in one but a few blocks from the cut off. This is going to be a long 2-3 days. No way in or out of the city. All bridges and mass transit stopped at 12 and the funny thing is I'm watching Escape from New York.
Hey Landmark be safe. |
