I thought this would be a good place to center our discussion and experiences about the coming hurricane.
In another thread, I mentioned that I had gotten an unprecedented call from the NYC emergency preparedness department asking me to volunteer at a hurricane evacuation center on Sunday. This morning I got another call asking me to reconsider my decision (I'll explain why I said no, in a moment). They said the call was going out to all NYC govt employees, and that they would be paid for their time. I assume this means they didn't get enough of a response. As a NYC school teacher, I officially begin work after Labor Day, but I already had volunteered to go into my school to work a week earlier, starting this Monday. That means I would have a lot of prep to do this weekend, and I wouldn't have time to help run a shelter. To make this even more interesting, my son, who just moved into a city college dormitory last week has been told he will have to evacuate his dorm starting tonight. His building is too close to the river. So, today, on his first day of classes, he will be back home with us. Well at least he won't have to worry about doing the laundry. I'm (perhaps foolishly) a little skeptical about the hype around this. They are predicting 6- 10 inches of rain. Which is a lot. Only thing is, this has been an incredibly wet summer for us, and just a few days ago we were hit with over 7.5 inches of rain, and the city pretty much got through the day as any other day. It's hard to know how much is hype and how much is a real threat. A few years ago we were all duct taping our windows and school was called off, only to find out that the hurricane had bypassed us. And how is it by you?
