I've been studying Troy Hooser's Charming Chinese Challenge and really like the construction of the routine.
Anyway, I picked up 4 half dollar size washers with 1/4" holes at the local Ace for 40 cents. The recommended Sterling coins are about 30 bucks for a set of 4, I believe. Question - Do you fellers think the effect is degraded in any fashion by the use of washers instead of the coins? I love a beautiful prop as much as anyone, but in this case I believe a washer may be as good or even preferable to the Chinese coins. Thoughts? Later..... Steve |

Washers have the advantage of familiarity; spectators will be less likely to suspect that they're fishy.
If you routine this with Doc Eason's nuts-and-bolts opener (I forget his name for it), it should be very impressive, and highlight your skill. |

I use washers also for this routine. Works just as good, maybe better than chinese coins because the wholes are a little bigger so the ribbon doesn't get caught up. Plus you save $29!

Washers make sense, and are kind of funny, too. But they really have nothing to do with a ribbon. On the other hand, if you could find a thin, flexible (cloth) tape measure, bright yellow, now you're talking. I think I know where to get this, but it's not the hardware store.

The Sterling Chinese coins are simply washers with some black paint on them anyway.

Washers and plumbing stuff is very cool when used in character, or when polished up.
Chinese money does not look like the 'good luck' or 'love' tokens anymore. I put some thoughts on good effects using real chinese coins and customse on another thread for anyone interested.

Home Depot and like stores are one of my favorite Non Magic Magic Stores.
One can get a very bizzare look and routine by using them as monocles or with two of them painted white, an Orphan Annie imitation. During April of a recent year the editor of our Ring Newsletter used a picture of me in my washer "contacts" and told the story of my "eye injury" For years I have been calling mine "Brain Washers" Although I do use Sterling Realistic Coins that I got from Ben Stones Shop many years ago, there is something of a connection with people and the washers. I can also use true patter about my ability with magic being contrasted with my being mechanically challenged. You can also get the washers in many sizes from "jumbo coin size" to mini for great spellbound and break/splitting routines. Of course you can combine washers and "chinese" coins for some interesting routines as well. Thanks for posting. Harris

I picked up some brass chinese coins (12) at a decorating store for $6. Then a week later saw a chinese windchime with 6 much better brass coins for $5 Shop around.

I don't see anything wrong with using washers for a lot of coin effects. You can get brass washers and bust out with a pretty mean c/s washer routine.
Pretty soon we will be seeing jumbo washers for sale at the magic shops!! |

If your act has other coins tricks, especially foreign, I would recommend the Chinese coins. If your act consists of misc. props, use the washers.

Well, washers give some patter differences, while Chinese coins just look more pretty and are more interesting than just plain washers.

You wouldn't normally find me within a hundred yards of a "New Age" shop (man, I hate those places), but I did spot a Feng Shui hanging charm in the window of one that was composed of eight fake Chinese coins strung together. The coins are slightly under Dollar-size and really thin.
You should have seen the look on the shopkeeper's face when I told him what I wanted the charm for. Priceless! It cost £3.99, and when I got home I found one of my favourite Internet magic dealers was selling the exact same coins for £2.50 each! Gotta love contextual pricing! Cheers, Cy. |
