I need people to practice tricks on. My girlfriend is on her way to being bored already. I'm worried if I practice tricks in front of different family members, they'll figure things out - especially in cases where there's a force that always has to be used. How do you guys approach significant others and family?

Considering the huge number of forces detailed in books over the centuries, I think you could just employ three or four different forces for the three or four different routines.
At a "Raleigh Festival of Magic" one year the attendees gathered after the last stage show for some late night close-up. I did one of my classic original routines in which the jack of clubs is "selected," but I call it by its German name--Kreuzbube (pronounced "kroitz-boobuh") because of the patter in my routine. The lay person (part of the theater staff) was of course blown away by the trick ... And then some of the other magicians did card tricks for her... and each time she picked a card, it was the Kreuzbube. It was kind of an impromptu running gag idea that made for a memorable session and drove our unsuspecting spectator crazy. One of my ideas for a close-up routine is a demonstration that free will is an illusion, which of course would require a lot of different forces or subtleties that look like forces. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

It sounds like you have a couple different problems: First, I wouldn't "practice" in front of family or friends. I think what you mean is performing "trial runs" for family. If that's what you mean, I would suggest getting a magic buddy to do those trial runs. Everyone needs someone to be bad in front of.

Encyclopedia of Impromptu Card Forces by Lewis Jones is a great tool for learning some new forces. Its just recently been reprinted and is worth a look.

Yeah, I'm trying to find a magic buddy.
Btw, I wasn't worried about people understanding my forces. It was more of them seeing the same trick multiple times with the same card. For example, imagine seeing face up wow three times over the course of months and seeing that its the same 9 of diamonds each time. |

Paul, I'm in the SF bay area and there are a couple SAM that I am looking into. Seems like most only meet once a month which is a little disappointing.
I like the idea of going to coffee shops. However, how do you feel about practicing gaffs that way? The concept of a shell was so foreign to me when I got my first that I feel I would ruin magic for people if I screwed it up and exposed one. |

How do you guys approach significant others and family? I ask them to help me out. That I have practised a trick I plan to perform for the general public and want to know what they think of the trick the patter and the handling. There is basically this difference. There are people who I ask to help and there are people who ask me to perform. just a thought, Danny PS practice so you don't get busted -----but everyone gets busted sometimes. So what? |

Thanks for the suggestion for magic buddies. I'm going to find one in Los Angeles because I don't want to run trial runs on my friend and families; I'd rather put together trial routines that hopefully would be more rewarding to them.

Djurmann, I don't mind being busted on sleights. Just gaffs. Especially ones that are common - like shells.

If you have a video camera you could video tape youself therefore you and watch it back and see what the spec would see and you could do the same force over and over believe me the camera wont tell.

In the mean time before you find your magic buddy, a mirror and video camera should be able to help you out. I have utilized the mirror and it helps. This weekend will be the first time I will set up the camera.
Good Luck |
