A hypothetical of course...
Imagine, you're on your deathbed, surrounded by your loved ones... The end is near, you can feel it. (Maybe a few hours, the doctors say...) You can still speak coherently... What do you leave them with as your last words? (I know the jokes will come pouring in now, knowing the Café... but those who want to reflect on this a little bit seriously, please share... )

I expected as much... But those we're good.
Any serious takers though?

It's a toss up between singing a few bars of "Alice's Restaurant" or "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life". Probably the latter.
You know why don't act naive.

So far all the answers have been in jest but I have known for the last 30 years what my final words would be.

And you aren't going to tell us, Tim?
In all seriousness, I would hope that my last words would be, "I love you all". But, you know, I might be crazy with a fever or something when I die. Still, those are the words I'd like to have come out of my mouth. And on my gravestone, too. |

Myself, I would hope that the serious things had all been said long before the last minutes. Although my comment was semi-tongue-in-cheek, I really wouldn't want a bunch of people gathered around the bed waiting for me to die.

Ok.. I will spill but I need to warn you that this may come across as uber mushy. Well.. Jeff took the first step so I can follow his lead.
Short version.... 30 years ago I met a girl that I just knew was the love of my life. I knew I'd never find another to ever top her. I was a stupid kid then and when she didn't immediately return those feelings I turned around, walked out of her life and never spoke to her again. I never did find a real replacement for her and eventually gave up trying after many years. I always felt bad about how things went back then and always thought when I ran out of time and knew I had only moments left those last words would be " Tell Linda .. I've always loved her" A few years ago she looked me up online ( floored me after so long ) and I learned she had gotten divorced and was starting a new life. Well... I've been officially dating her for the past year and life is wonderful! My final words will still be " Tell Linda.. I've always loved her" |

Except your PM box is full. Darn.
Man, I've got tears in my eyes, and it's not uber mushy: it's what we are all yearning for, in the end. Tell Linda I love her too (in the context of this thread, of course). |

Moreover, with respect to going out joking, it would bring a smile to people's faces (hopefully after a little initial pain faded) and also possibly some inspiration (Even on his deathbed, he was still making us laugh...) I think there's a lot to say for 'funny' over 'profound' on the way out.
With that being said, allow me to share an idea that my best friend (full-time magician) and I have been kicking around, in the event of an untimely demise... People gather in the church for a memorial service, and on a big screen TV, the officant pops in a DVD. It's the dearly departed, in suit and tie, addressing us all. "Hi, and thank you all for being here. If you're watching this, it means I'm no longer with you, but I want you all to know important you were to me, and how much I enjoyed our time together. Of course, you know that magic was a big part of my life, and many of you were the crash-test dummies for some of my favorite tricks. What I'd like to ask...call it a dying request...is that you help me out one last time." (produces deck of cards) "I'd like each of you to watch the cards as I run my finger along the edge of the deck, and just think about one of them. Just concentrate on any of the cards you see, and repeat its name in your mind, over and over. And, thanks again, for everything." (dead magician does an optical fan force of, say, the 7 of spades) (brief memorial concludes, and guests are asked to walk past open casket on the way out. There, decked out in the suit he wore for the video, is our hero...with a peaceful expression...hands together, slightly crossed, at the abdomen...and clutched between the thumb and index finger of one hand...the 7 of spades. MY GOD! Talk about memorable. People would be talking about it for the rest of their lives. Any children in the crowd would immediately hit the library or the magic shop and start studying 10 hours a day to become magicians. Talk about packing small and playing big. Copperfield, Blaine, Angel...NOBODY would ever compare to what your guests saw. Copperfield could make the Empire State Building disappear, and your second cousin's kid would be saying, "Yeah, that was kind of cool, but my uncle (he wouldn't know that you were actually his second cousin once removed) was a magician, and he was so good, he found my card AFTER HE DIED!!!!" Insta-legend.

My favorite fictional last words:
The Governor: "Have you any famous last words?" Baron von Munchausen, his head on the executioner's block: "Not yet!" The Governor: "'Not yet?' Are those famous?" -- Favorite actual last words: "I'd hate to die twice. It's so boring." (Richard Feynman) -- As for mine? Haven't thought about them yet. I'll probably do whatever I usually do when I have to say important things: ad lib. |
