Just wondering if anybody uses Ableton Live in their performance? I'm currently putting a set of sounds together for a seance routine (halloween is right around the corner). The plan is to have a midi foot controller under the table so I can trigger sounds as I need them. As a part time magician and full time live user I'm curious if anyone else has come up with a creative use for live in their act.

Ableton live is not a very stable platform.

I've been using Ableton live for more than 6 years and have never had a stability issue. It wouldn't be used by world touring musicians if it were so "unstable". Ableton Live is one of the best applications in its class, easy to use, and almost infinitely customizable to any performance needs. I currently use it in 3 different bands, and I perform several times per week, and I've yet to encounter a single problem with it. If you do some research on it, you'll find trey's comment unfounded and baseless.
I'm not trying to start a web fight with trey, but throwing around baseless statements about highly respected applications that are used by industry leading performers is irresponsible and disingenuous, in my opinion. |

Well I am glad it works for you. But for us it was to unstable for live use. We now run all our backing tracks off of a Roland Juno Di. Win Amp is just as stable and it is free. It is what we used for years. Had it loaded on a laptop only used for playback. And we never had a problem. We use real synths and e-drums so we don't need the vst synths and drums and such that are included with Ableton Live. If you want to use special effects or sounds. Get yourself a sampler, load the sounds you want to use on it. And trigger it with a midi foot pedal

If it's unstable, it is possibly a hardware and not a software issue. Ableton live requires a more robust processor then win amp.
The question of whether or not to use a standalone sampler versus a computer/laptop is an interesting one. If you have a dedicated sampler and MIDI foot pedal, you will probably have a safer and more stable platform for what you need. Using a normal computer to play back audio files is usually requiring much more processing than is necessary. On the other hand, there are many excellent audio playback software packages that exist today and are used professionally around the world. I used SFX for many years and also use SCS as well for many shows and found it to be very reliable and stable if using the proper processor. Using Ableton Live for the basic playback you need might be overkill but if you really like the software and are used to working with it, it should be fine.
