As a collector/non performer, I find it refreshing to be able to read this discussion and see we can all have our opinions yet we don't ruffle each others feathers so to speak. Kudos to all of us here on Magic Café.

NEVER forget to have a good time yourself. Yes, you are there to entertain and to get paid for it, but this is also your method of being entertained. If you ever stop having fun yourself, then you have lost sight of the prize.
I think that Steve gave some of the best advice in this statement! If we are not believeing the illusion ourselves, having fun as performers and enjoying our audiences - even if we are heckled from time to time - we miss out on the whole reason for what we do. Yes we should strive for attaining the best we can in all areas of our art but if we don't believe in what we do our audiences will be able to tell and then we will have more problems. I figure that part of my job is to bring my audience back to the part of their brain that requires play - we all have that part it is just that some of us have forgotten about it and unfortunately our schools are trying to ignore that part of the brain too - so when we allow our audience to believe that our puppets are real we are giving them a gift, a gift of play! And in order for that to happen I need to believe it myself! Thanks for bringing up that point Steve - our audiences truly do want to have fun, it is our job to provide that and when the puppets can shut down the hecklers it only adds to the sense of play! |

I wonder how many thousands and thousands of puppets are sold each year to people who are just playing around, or people that are interested in ventriloquism?
Just think how few of those people will ever achieve true professional status. The point I wanted to make to Hansel was to just have fun. Sure, his lip control might not be 100%. Hey, he might be heckled. I saw your lips move, or that's not a real bear. But if his routine is enjoyable to most people and he has fun, that is what counts. Yes, you even see some of the real professionals move their lips sometimes, but obviously, no one cares because they are making some serious money doing what they really enjoy. Gee wiz, if anyone wants to chastise someone for slightly moving their lips, no one would ever try ventriloquism. One can be perfect at home in front of a mirror, but when they are performing they might be caught in the moment. As soon as I arrive at a show, I'll pull down the mirror on my cars visor and practice. Sometimes I'm perfect and other times I'll notice my lips moving slightly. I'll keep practicing until I do not see it happening anymore. Now what happens at the show, I do not know. |

I will be the first to agree about having fun, and the first to agree about not chastising someone if their lips move slightly, everyone, as I said before, has times when it's good, and times when it's not so good. And hopefully, everyone is doing the same, practicing until they do not see it happening any more - that's the key.
So we're on the same page there, but where I end up on a different page is when I see a statement like; "Yes, you even see some of the real professionals move their lips sometimes, but obviously, no one cares because they are making some serious money...." So because they're making money, that makes it okay? Because they're making money, "no one cares"? Is that really what we want to tell people who are coming into the art? And that type of statement really doesn't differentiate between those who just move their lips slightly sometimes, and those who obviously can't do it or obviously are not worrying about it - and we know there are a number of those out there. Anyone that thinks "no one cares" is fooling themselves. Again, what is the ONE thing that the general public knows about ventriloquism? The audience may enjoy the show otherwise, they may not make any audible comments during the show, but it registers because the one and only thing they know about ventriloquism is not what they got (and again, I'm referring to the ones who obviously can't or obviously are not worrying about it). Here's something else I don't understand and never will - looking back at Bob's analogy about someone doing magic that can't really do it, or a singer, or a musician, or any other performance art: is there any other performance art where people who just can't do it, or don't want to put the work into doing it right, and everyone says "no one cares", or "it doesn't matter", etc., etc.? So why is it okay with ventriloquism? What is it about ventriloquism that makes it okay to not do it right? What makes it okay for those who can't or won't, to dilute the art just so they can call themselves "ventriloquists"? And even argue in defense of it being right and okay? Darn it! Got going again. The thing is, I love the art. No one is perfect all the time, including me, but when I'm not getting it right, I hate it because I love the art. I want to do it justice, portray it properly. It's an art that has, and has had, enough problems over the years with people's attitudes and perceptions of it for various reasons - and I have serious doubts we'll ever totally be free of those attitudes and perceptions. It certainly does not help when the "can'ts" or "won'ts" portray it poorly, and compound the injustice to the art by saying, "it doesn't matter".

Ha Ha, It almost sounds as if we are talking about politics. No one can change true Republicans, or true Democrats minds.
Just for the record, I'm one of those that strives to be perfect at lip control. It's just a quirk I have in anything and everything I do. If after a lot of practice, I still have trouble doing something, I'll give it up. An example of this is card manipulation, and juggling. When it comes to ventriloquism, I love it so much that I love to even practice it. Unfortunately, I have asthma, which for me causes me to have a smokers cough, even though I've never smoked about 30% of the year. I take allergy shots, inhalers, etc., which has helped, but still I battle this darn cough. I have a Halloween magic/vent show coming up in which I'm developing 2 shows. One with a lot of puppets and ventriloquism, and the other with mostly magic, and very little if any ventriloquism, just in case I have my cough then. Talk about frustration. Just think of where any of you vents that make a living off of ventriloquism would be, if you had an unpredictable cough. |

That's usually the way it goes for most, especially in any performance art. For me, the first thing that comes to mind is magic. I tried it, I totally sucked at it with no hope of ever being even remotely good, so I gave it up and stuck to watching the people who are good at it. But ventriloquism, no big deal. If you can't do it the way it's supposed to be done, with either no hope or no effort towards getting better, just say it's not important or it doesn't matter, and just do it anyway. Yippee.

Hansel is probably scared to death now, to even try ventriloquism, especially since he has not responded to this post after his original post.
He probably thinks all ventriloquists are crazy. Now why would anyone that talks to puppets be crazy? |

My shrink told me that I was the sanest person he knew. I felt really good about that until I walked out in his waiting room and saw some of the others. It was like going to a ventriloquists convention - lol.

It was supposed to be a joke, sort of.....probably would have worked better if one of my figures said it.
Hmmm, just as I was typing that, the seed of a routine started to come to mind - thank you.

I'm glad to hear nothing we've said has scared you off.
It's not my intention in my comments to scare anyone away from ventriloquism, only to get them to realize the importance of doing it right, or continually striving to do it right. BTW, I have a PDF file of the book I used to learn the art, "Ventriloquism of Today" - it's free if you want it, just PM me your email address and I'll email it to you.
