Well, you can buy the balloons here:
http://www.qualatexballoons.co.uk/catalo......1-1.html (they're quite expensive!) And after that I guess you just have to climb in! Mark |

Hmmm....cant seem to find anyone who carries them is the US. At about $36 each, I can definetly see working this into a kid's stage show. It could be used to effect a not-so-quick quickchange!

Yes, I've seen it done with a quick change. But, I've also seen someone on "Britain's Got Talent" try this, and the first balloon burst. That really slowed things up - and even though he had a backup balloon ready, the guy was slated by the judges. Although I think it's quite a memorable and funny routine, I think it's for a certain type of performer, and mostly for larger shows.

I think Potty is referring to Buster Balloon on Americas Got Talent. Buster is BRILLIANT and had a bad break on the show. Check out Buster at busterballoon.com.

Those thinking of trying this out ought to be aware of some of the possible dangers of becoming a shink wrapped human.
I found this clip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSKzCnWd5tQ It's hilarious to watch but also really rather worrying. I'm sure it wouldn't have seemed quite as funny if the guy ended up panicking or worse dying. I think my attitudes must be starting to turn middle age as to me, even if it works as you plan it to, this doesn't seem like the kind of stunt that's approprate for a show specifically aimed at kids.

If some of us have trouble finding these balloons, what little kid do you think is gonna locate one, fork over $20-$40 bucks to buy one, figure out how to inflate the crazy thing, and then successfully climb inside?
I think the danger of attempting to duplicate this one is close to zero. BTW, how DO you inflate them? |

You inflate them with a leaf-blower. I would recommend a corded one as while the battery powered ones are convenient they often lack the gumption to do a second balloon should you need to.
No one should ever practice this alone (and if you do, don't video it unless you want to become the next Youtube sensation... and you won't be signing any autographs btw). I have two pair of scissors on me, one in a shirt pocket or on a lanyard around my neck and another in my pants pocket (the suggestion of having one pair above the waistline and one below comes from Larry Moss) and then I have a third that I give to an adult from the audience. This adult is told to break the balloon if I run into trouble and I emphasis that while this routine is funny, that I DO NOT joke about needing to be cut out if I should yell "Help" etc. After all that you might be thinking that this sounds so dangerous. But it's just like wearing a seatbelt on your way to the show. You'll probably never need it, but better to be safe than sorry.

Children have expansive imaginations. They need not find the exact same materials to move the chances of attempting an inspired duplication uncomfortably distant from zero. I believe that when giving a performance for children the performer automatically takes on a responsibility towards the children they are performing for. In such a situation it seems prudent to me to err on the side of caution. But each to their own.

And that's why we're so close to having a complete Nanny State... how about "kids.. this looks fun.. but it's a little dangerous. Don't try it at home" |

Makeupguy,
I don't quite see how making the choice to err on the side of caution, or making the choice not to, moves anyone closer to a Nanny State? How is the expression, "each to their own" anything other than an advocation of personal choices and decsions?

This is in the same line as the balloon swallowing trick, some like it and others think kids will try to imitate it.
I would think the 6 feet balloon escape would be an expensive trick to perform if you use it alot. You buy one for $20.00-$40.00, only to pop it at the end. |

If you are seriously considering doing this stunt, I recommennd the booklet "Climb In" as it goes over the safety tips as well as suggestions to make the stunt a bit easier to perform. Plan on a greater learning curve than you may at first suspect. Balloonsfast.com is one additional site for purchase. If you google search "climb in balloons" you will find many sources. I inflate mine with a small shop vac and it works well, though the leaf blowers are faster. I perform this stunt for kids all the time. They find it to be really funny. I also caution them that it is not for them to do because it is dangerous if you are not professionally trained. I'm not sure that I am willing to put it in the same category as balloon swallowing though (in terms of appropriate/inappropriate for children viewing). I perform this in most of my shows, unless I am in a small living room. It goes over very well in my Library Shows, Country Clubs, Scouts, and Outdoor Birthday Parties. It is a bit more involved than many would consider ideal for these venues, but that is one thing I believe sets me apart from my competition. John Cassidy (www.balloonfreak.com) ends his performance with a climb in balloon act that is unique and very funny. I have seen it live, but have not found it on video yet. His whole performance is really a cool blend of balloon sculpture, magic and comedy that fits well together.

I know the guy that Potty is talking about.....Simon zapped him the second he walked out onto the stage simply for what he was wearing! The BEST use & act of climb-inside balloons I've ever seen is Kate Laibistan.
