Did Katt Williams go too far?

Katt Williams has never been to my taste. Not that I don't think racial comedy can be funny, I just think there are few people who can pull it off without sounding more hostile than funny. And I don't think he's one of them.
It's called comedy, not dramedy.

I gave up at about 2:00.
Making fun of the powerful--often funny. Making funny of the powerless--generally pathetic. YMMV.

Michael Richards went on a racial rant a few years ago and damaged his reputation greatly. Somehow, I don't think Katt will suffer the same.

Well not if Katt Williams audience is comprised of social class z people who have less intelligence then an amoeba.

How low has the comedic bar been lowered? It seems that simply dropping F-bombs equates to comedy these days. I don't get it.
I saw Katt in an interview yesterday and he was totally unapologetic for his rant. The bottom line is that people will vote with their dollars, and the impact of this will be apparent in Katt's future shows. Now for some real comedy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weZyVYCN4jQ Ron

Genius, thanks for that. Pryor at his peak, to my mind has not yet been surpassed. Eddie Murphy probably had as much raw talent, but never the heart. I saw Pryor live at Radio City Hall in NYC after his crack pipe accident in the late 70s. Don't think I've ever seen anything or anyone funnier.

Since then, he has done voices in a couple of movies and appeared in several episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm. I doubt Katt (someone I had never heard of until this thread) will ever appear in anything as critically acclaimed as that series is. At least so far as television and movies count, Richards has actually done more post-rant (2007-2011) than in the same number of years immediately preceding it (2002-2006).

Katt cannot seem to decide whether he is apologizing for his rant or not:
From http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/09/01/katt.williams.rant/ ... "My remarks were not meant to be offensive," Williams said. "I want to apologize if my comedy act was taken out of context." "I sincerely appreciate my fans within the Mexican community and would never intentionally go out of my way to offend them." From http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/09/0......20110903 ... Williams stressed that as a comedian he cannot apologize for a performance, drawing a sharp line between what is said on stage and his true feelings. Williams had initially apologized – or so everyone thought. Instead, Williams said that was an apology written by his publicist and not his own. This incident is the latest in a string of public controversies for the comedian. Just last week he was kicked out of a Young Jeezy concert for his role a brawl, and in June he was arrested for threatening a potential witness after a bizarre stand-off with a tractor driver.

The general premise is a little funny (and not novel; another example is found in Caddyshack):
Danny Noonan: I haven't even told my father about the scholarship I didn't get. I'm gonna end up working in a lumberyard the rest of my life. Ty Webb: What's wrong with lumber? I own two lumberyards. Danny Noonan: I notice you don't spend too much time there. As for the rant/racial/meanness aspect of it; I'd want to know exactly what the guy said. I'm not sure where the suggestion that he was making fun of "the powerless" came from.

Mexican immigrants tend to be a lot less powerful than a crowd being induced to yell "USA, USA!" Pretty lame to me.

"As for the rant/racial/meanness aspect of it; I'd want to know exactly what the guy said. I'm not sure where the suggestion that he was making fun of "the powerless" came from." The Mexican guy called Katt the N-word about six times, gave him the middle finger and wouldn't stop interrupting the show, that’s what set lit the fuse. The guy didn't obey the two cardinal rules of attending a stand-up comedy show: do not heckle the comedian and don't sit near the front row. Katt's rant was nationalistic in nature, not racist, although the landscaper comment was a bit over the top.

I think it's irrelevant what an audience member says during a comedy show. There's always going to be someone who (with or without the aid of alcohol) will yell something to the performer (or just to draw attention to themsleves). There are tactful ways to handle hecklers. But it seems to me to be in poor taste for the performer to go off and engage in such a direct and profane attack on someone who paid to come to your show. I was at a live Tommy Davidson show a few years back and he was being heckled by a drunk in the audience. After responding with some witty comebacks a couple times, it became apparent that the drunk would persist and become an annoyance. Tommy warned the drunk to cool it or he would have him removed. Tommy continued with the show and the next time the heckler opened his mouth, Tommy simply had security remove him, to wild applause from the audience. No personal attacks, no rants, no F-bombs from Tommy.
Katt's failure here was not so much whether he was right or wrong in his political stance, but that he allowed himself to be drawn into a verbal schoolyard brawl. Ron
