I used to have an old tape set called " Mega Math " by Kevin Trudeau which taught you how to do quick calculations like this and it has served me well but this Guy has taken the short cuts to a new level therefore I feel a new book is to be added to both my library and my brain.
Thanks for sharing the link. Dr Rob. |

Thoroughly enjoyed that - makes my maths degree look laughable
He has the persona to be a good mentalist too! |

Wow - I had a fascination with this material as a child, but the school system beat it out of me (literally, in the case of one teacher). Wonderful to see it taken to this level.

This really seems to take the things in Corinda and such works to new levels.
My question is what place do you think such demonstrations have in a mentalism show? Can it come for example in the middle of two mind reading effects? I guess the same can also be asked regarding memory demonstrations. Jonathan |

If I could do what he does, I would combine it with memory demonstrations for an hour long stand-alone show. There are two markets that spring to mind immediately; schools and corporate. Offer the show, with a memory development seminar afterwards.
What he does is special, but most of us could master a good memory show. Making it entertaining is another problem - but Arthur Benjamin has no worries on that score.

Thanks for your replies.
I wasn't talking about performing it on the level he did but rather just a couple of stunts like those out of Corinda, for example day of the year, squaring numbers etc. The thing that I'm thinking about is whether it would fit in, for example, after a just chance routine and before a prediction effect? or would this type of demonstration be out of place? Perhaps it would be better to have a show only of memory feets and lightning calcualtions and another sperate show of mentalism instead of combining the two? Yours, Jonathan |

Well, how does one develop ones intuition or psychic powers?
Several real books for the occult community (such as William Walker Atkinson and, more recently, Konstantinos) actually teach CMR as the "baby steps" before learning real mind reading. Also several Taiji teachers (for those to whom this makes any sense) say that when you get good enough at sensing your opponents energies in push hands you will be able to sense them in a fight even without any physical contact (which, btw, is true). Perhaps practicing lightning calculations and memory skills will lead to a greater capacity to intuit what people are most likely to do in certain situations (based on your rapid assessment/analysis of what you've observed in the past) and eventually even blossom into a level of intuition where you are able to know through direct intuitive experience things that could absolutely not be known to you at all. That's just theoretical. I don't do any memory or calculation demonstrations (but I did just order this guys book!), but it seems reasonable enough to me. EDIT: Just for some potentially useful added logic. Doing calculations so lightning quick you (presumably) are doing a lot of it on an unconscious level. This level of comfort with you unconscious (could) automatically increase your intuition. Also the unconscious mind is directly connected to the higher mind and the holographic universe and therefore has access to all information Not that you have to believe that (I do, more or less) but a lot of people do and I think it makes a logical premise for the progression I mentioned above.

Also, I wonder if spending so much time with numbers could get in touch with the powers behind those numbers on some level and let you know about numbers that you shouldn't know about (like the numbers in a black jack hand or other group of cards, or add a number, et cetera).
And of course deep study of memory involves getting in touch with our conception of time and looking backwards into our own experiences. Of course time is illusionary so deep contact with time might allow us to remember other peoples experiences (first kiss?) or even begin to remember future events that have "not happened" yet. That might be a little woo-woo for most of us. ...not me though, I'd use it. ...heck, I'd even believe it!

Seadog interesting ideas!
Following the thread of your ideas I guess in the simplest form the mentalist can use these demonstrations as "mental warm up" before the more difficult mind reading experiments. Yours, Jonathan |

Why not put yourself into a light trance, and display your heightened intuition instead and do rapid fire maths calculations...you are getting them as symbols and shapes rather than applying anything else..
would be fun to get some very simple maths wrong near the start of the show too...

I don't think you need to dress up this in any way. It is strong enough - and then some - on its own.

Still, as a mental game it's fun to think of how this would lead into mentalism. Here's on more: I wonder if this could be presented after a some mentalism towards the end of a show; or even at the end of the performance in the same way that Nelson says mentalism can work at the end of a magic show (he's right). You could explain that as a mentalist you work with your mind. Of course you primarily demonstrate and study psychic phenomena with your mind (or whatever you do), but the mind is so vast and complex that even the mysterious "sixth" sense is only on part of it. There are many more aspect that can be just as fascinating. For example, who here loves math? NO!? REALLY!? Well let me share something having to do with math that I've been working on. It doesn't have anything to do psychism at all, but if you give me a chance I think you'll have to agree it's fascinating.

The real value in this video, I think, is seeing how entertaining a lightning calculator act can be, and also how to structure such an act - this is really well put together. |
