Ricky,
People don't go to mentalism shows to have their lives changed. They go to be entertained for a couple of hours. It's a fun night out for them, that's all. It's show business. |

But why do so many creators describe their work as profound, life changing and deeply affecting. I'm confused...

... Maybe because some like to believe that what they are doing is more important than it really is... Doctors can change lives, religion can change lives, education can change lives. A mentalism show? Very unlikely it's purpose is entertainment...

I am not a trouble-maker, just want to learn from the masters. I made that link because, as Davit Sicseek said, that authors release material in that type of theme, about deep connections, angels, etc.

People don't learn with an attitude. rickhypno ha also been stirring things up in the Hypnosis forum too lately, under the guise of learning, yet displaying ignorance. I've noticed with this guy, there seems to be a lack of respect for the pros and those with more experience. A lot of noise from someone who's only been here three weeks trying to get his post count up. You can't learn if you are always talking.

Hey guys, I'm Jake and I'm just starting my journey into mentalism, but ive been a close-up worker for over ten years now. I just wanted to add my two cents into the discussion, I personally think good mentalism is anything that isn't overly complex that is presented by a truely charasmatic performer and I actually do agree with the above that a good mentalism presentation or show should have almost like a small changing aspect to someones life. By that, I don't mean like "I saw this show so now I found god" kind of change, just that the people walk away thinking something like "wow, was I having my mind read or being influenced that easily?", great example of course being Derren Brown's stage shows On the flipside, bad mentalism in my opinion is when someone gets in front of a crowd and takes himself way to seriously and who gets the traditional magic responce I used to encounter all the time "I wonder where he was hiding this or who was feeding information". That is ultimately the biggest difference between magic and mentalism to me, the responces differ and honestly mentalism presentations have a lot more room to be interesting and feel more real, which is why I am starting to move away from traditional close-up anymore.

I have a friend that use psychic readings in his repertoire, and he is a "life-changing" guy, for me readings are part of mentalism and readings are entertaining.

Psychic Escape
Man has an invincible inclination to allow himself to be deceived and is, as it were, enchanted with happiness when the rhapsodist tells him epic fables as if they were true, or when the actor in the theater acts more royally than any real king. So long as it is able to deceive without injuring, that master of deception, the intellect, is free; it is released from its former slavery and celebrates its Saturnalia. It is never more luxuriant, richer, prouder, more clever and more daring. - Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche |

Hey, I know this topic is a little old but I finally found this video on youtube and to me, this is what good mentalism looks like. It even brought me back to that moment of astonishment where everything about this presentation amazed me:

Mentalism in it's truest and purest sense is NOT entertainment. It CAN be entertaining (because after all, entertainment is subjective) but that is not it's intended purpose when presented for it's noble intentions

Magician,
Darren Brown is amazing, no secret there...however, I don't get the light bulb effect. I mean, his words sound pretty but it seems disjointed to the casual observation. Darren Brown has blown me away with simple effects and grand demonstrations, but the light bulb effect just didn't "get there" for me. |

If I may, I will quote myself from another, private forum :
"For me, passivity is bred by the forces of society today. A desire to be entertained is nurtured from childhood, with increasing efficiency, cultivating generations willing to be led by whoever proves skilful at appealing to superficial emotions. Even in many educational systems, students are treated as though they were receptacles designed to receive information. For me the beauty of mentalism and mysticism is not for the appealing of the superficial emotions of the masses, but rather the evoking of an impetus to act. Act for the betterment of society, to evoke such deep emotions, that there will be no other impulse but to express the ensuing outpouring of being a true and humble servant for their common breed. I feel this is where mentalists and mystics will fit within a society that will no longer allow for simple entertainments to satisfy their superficiality and "animal nature"....the world is yearning for depth....really, who cares that the mentalist "somehow knew what I was thinking" or "influenced me to pick a chinese coin" or "made me spin around on the spot like a human pendulum" What we are doing as mentalists today is "conforming" to the superficial needs of society, step beyond this and we will enter a realm where "spirit" is the creative art form, and invoking of such depth and core resonance that it will invoke a permanent change within the audience who will in turn "act" for the betterment of their fellow man.... This, in my humble opinion is the "art" of mentalism (but few are really ready for this yet, me included)" Kam

To my mind and to sum it up in just a few words, great mentalism is when you are able to suspend your audiences dis-belief which they cannot help talk about for days and weeks to come.

Ok, so now we have to define "entertainment", since mentalism, like magic (as a performance art), must be captivating enough to hold the interest of the audience, and as such, be entertaining. But mentalism, as the topic of methodology/effect-vs-work done/how many props/etc. is a topic discussed between those who don't concern themselves about the audience or the effect, yes?
There are too many definitions required to be able to get a clear discussion going... Lee But, IMO, good mentalism is drop dead gob-smacking effects with easy to understand plots and amazing outcomes, all done theatrically well. |

Lee-
I think the problem is that many are considering the art of giving private readings to be synonymous with mentalism. It is not. Mentalism, by definition, is basically, stage mind reading. While mentalists often incorporate techniques of the reader into their performances, and even do readings on the side, they are not really the same thing. Yes, to be effective, readings should be meaningful and should connect on an emotional level with the sitter. While they can be entertaining, most sitters are seeking answers, not amusement. Stage mind reading, or mentalism, on the other hand, is primarily a form of mystery ENTERTAINMENT. Good thoughts, Bob |
