Got it!!!!!
Just got back from an "audition" and got hired to perform on November 5th. They did not want to discuss payment just yet, but they said I'll probably get paid by the hour. YES! First paid gig booked! I got there and there were two people, the daughter of the man I met and another person who owns the company that I auditoned at. I talked to the a little bit about the event. It is a HUGE event that involves the entire community, so I would be roaming around the various shops and restaurants and performing walk-around magic for people. They asked me how I got started in magic, and so I told them that Criss Angel inspired me after I watched one of his TV shows a few years ago, and I got really involved after that. So then, one of the ladies was talkng to my dad about the event and said that they are trying to get a big-name magician to come to the event, but it is highly unlikely and she is not allowed to tell me who it is. Oddly, it seemed as though she was hinting at me about something, just by the way she was talking and looking at me. (Criss Angel, maybe? That would be so awesome!). After my audition, she came over to me and asked if I knew who Shawn Farquhar is. I have heard of him, I believe he is a member of the Magic Café, but I have never really watched him. I will definitely look him up, though, because I think that he is the magician (other than me, of course) that they are trying to get. So, the two people at down and I set up some walk-around material and showed it to them. Sponge balls (which is my fav routine to perform and probably my most impactful routine), Magic Coloring Book, Ball Vase, and Svengali. I have more routines, but those are my four favorite and are easy to set up and perform. They got the drift that I am more of a children's magician, so they said that they would try to hook me up at a Toy Store or something. But they loved it, thought it was great material, so they hired me!!!! Anyways, now I have a gig booked every month from here on through November (this gig), and I have an possible gig in January and I'm sure I could land something in December with Christmas rolling around. So, wish me good luck, I am well on my way to becoming the next MINDFREAK!!! lol |

I've been looking up some of Shawn Farquhar's stuff on YouTube, I'm really liking it! Actually, I had already seen his "Shape of My Heart" card song previously, just never associated a name to a face. I really loved him on Penn and Teller "Fool Us", such a great act and presentation.

When I had one of these posts last year, someone said, "break a thread." Thought that was hilarious. I love to see this and thanks for sharing. Be sure and tell us how it goes.

Don't worry about the money right now. Just be thrilled, as you are, that you got a paying gig at all. You will learn a LOT from your first professional gig. Make sure you are open to feedback from your audiences. Learn from their responses - they will be more helpful to you than all those hours of practice in front of the mirror. Most importantly, enjoy it!

If you do get to work next to a "big name" magician, off to buy him lunch or dinner so you can sit down and talk with him. Have a few basic questions in mind, and get a few more questions from watching him work (like why he interacts with people a certain way, or chose to routine a trick you do in a much different manner). You will learn more from him in an hour over dinner than you will from DVD sets costing three times as much!

It is doubtful that this magician will be able to buy him lunch as Shawn will no doubt beat him to picking up the tab. That's the kind of guy Shawn is. If you are lucky enough to get to share a gig with him then by all means hook up with him and learn everything you can from him. Also tell him Payne say's Hi.

Wow, thanks for the tips and support, guys! I'm so excited! If indeed they do bring in Mr. Farquhar, he seems like a really nice person, really passionate about magic, and obviously very fun to watch! Hope they do bring him in, I'd love to talk to him!

Congrats! I had taken a several year sabbatical from magic, just getting back in last year. I worked carefully for several months to put an act together and had my first paid gig this past summer. I was stoked!
Enjoy the rush and remember it! Keep it going!!! |
