Okay, I’m doing some research (full disclosure) for possible theme routines.
but, I also think this would be a fun contest (no prizes of course…) to dig deep into your closet of “Hidden Treasures” ancient Magic Shop Catalogues, and those books we all have gathering dust… Question: How many parlor/small-stage effects can you help list that utilize a Wine, Beer, Champagne, or other Bottle as the focal prop? My first thoughts are: Passe-Passe Bottles, Multiplying Bottles, and “This” (a popular brand of “That” silk trick.) Wanna play? Thanks! Walt |

This is a great list guys, who'd every thought there were this number of past and present bottle effects (and maybe future new ones) and this was just from a day or so. There were a lot I've known or used, but some new ones here I wasn't aware of. Thanks for playing! Walt

I'm sure there are a lot more, but I'd have to have time to dig. I had been modestly collecting bottle tricks for awhile, so I'm thinking I may have more info.
Are you and Michael cooking up another possible new release?

I did a similar thing for Hiram Walker many moons ago. It was fun to theme the act using a lot of their products.

Have you looked at Potter's index to magic in print@ It is dated but there is a bunch of reference in it.
Maybe you could learn to play the musical bottles like a miramba. Richard

I have a Dye Tube that is a small wine bottle, Thayre made.
At the end of the routine you squash the newspaper and the presentation of the bottle excludes making anything go south.

Egg In Bottle.
Genii in the Bottle (where you put the end of the rope into the bottle and the Genii grabs hold of it). Levitating Bottle (a bit like the levitating glass of wine, but using a dark or full bottle). |

Will Dexter’s Everybody’s Book of Magic (1956, pp. 148-152), describes ”David Nixon's Bewitched Bottle.”
First a rope is inserted into a clear glass bottle. The bottle hangs from the rope. Next, a key is hung from a thread and the bottle sealed with a cork, yet the key moves around. The label is initialed with a pencil, but the mark can’t be erased because the label in now inside the bottle. |

Pete: Innovative and the good-old-days perspective, thanks again.
Thom: I loved Will Dexter, I'll revisit all his stuff again! His "The is Magic" was an amazing mini-history of our art. Steve: That was soooo much fun, your story really accentuated the magic, I love when two or three effects are linked. Everyone: Thanks so much participating, not only was this fun, but really illuminating for me personally. Magically, Walt |

Niffen Tube, vanish and produce just about anything wet or dry you can fit into it. While not a bottle effect in a classic sense, it acts just like a bottle in that it's merely a cylindrical container with a screw on top.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |
