I got a call today from a kid that wanted me to teach him magic (for free) so he coud do some magic at a party he is going to tonight. I told him to send me an e-mail and I can send him some advice. Have you had this happen before, and what did you do?
Thanks, Grand illusions magic |

I am a member of "AllExperts.com" and I have gotten a question like that once or twice before. I tell them that like anything you can't learn magic in a night/week or what ever short period of time. We need to remember that yes there are quick fixes (self working tricks for example) but that is not magic. Magic is an art form that takes practice, presentation, etc.

Well I think it is important that you let the kid know that you would love to teach him magic and help him on the way, but learning magic so he can perform it that night is out of the question.
In order to properly learn magic you must spend the time to practice and get it right and come up with a good entertaining patter long before you are ready to perform it for anyone. People getting started in magic must come to realize that magic takes time, passion and dedication and should never be used simply as a means of "fooling" people. Let him know you can help him out and offer him some advice but he is best to not perform that evening, but wait until he has a few good effects learned and rehearsed and practiced.

Yes, it has happened to me. But no one told me they wanted to learn it for a night time party. And people usually offer me money for classes. I simply tell them I was gifted in being a magician, not a teacher. I also tell them where to go if they really want to learn.

If they really want to learn, I will direct them to my local area SYM or SAM club, and I will point out to them to start with The Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic. It is a great book and a wonderful way to get started in the hobby.

I had a call yesterday for a birthday party for next weekend. After going through my spiel, the lady said what she really wanted was someone to teach some magic tricks to the 11-12 year olds. I referred her to a local magician who has held magic classes in the past.

Thank you. I did tell him that learning magic for tonight would not be very good but I could help him learn magic. I said we could plan a time for a lesson and I could show him some magic and help him get started. He asked what time I could be there today, and I said I was already booked for the day but this week I could find some time. As I said the "time" I heard him hang up.
Thank you for your help. I know I was on the right track. Thanks again, Grand Illusions Magic |

He hung up on you?!?!
I try to treat people the way that I want to be treated. But when someone is rude to me, I usually ignore them in the future...or get even. Teach him the 21 card trick... but teach him wrong. |

Well, you certainly handled the situation the right way. Too many people want to get into magic for all the wrong reasons. It is a shame that they feel magic is only about "fooling" people and a way of showing off.
By handling it the way you did, you are really finding out if the person has a real interest and dedication to learn. By hanging up like he did, it proves he had the wrong motivation to begin with.
