Hello, I'm Jake and I have been performing for, in the ball park of about 10 years doing close up sleight of hand magic as well as being a hypnotist. I've had a lot of success in my community as a performer of both, but the more I look into mentalism, the more I feel it is time for a change. I have very little experience in mentalism and have been really inspired by performers such as Derren Brown, Patrick Redford, Banachek and the other fine mentalists out there who are doing truely different routines that really conjure up a lot more questions in a lay audiences mind than your run of the mill hanging coins routine. I have read Corinda, studied into NLP, hypnosis, muscle reading and worked out some of the things I have seen mentalists perform with a different presentational spin with great results, but can you all help me off in my journey into mentalism so I can dig even deeper? I am looking for some truely hard hitting principles, concepts and, yes, even some great routines to expand my knowledge, does anyone have any truely amazing read or less perferably DVD's to help me dig deeper?

Everything you need is in here: http://www.lybrary.com/thirtynine-steps-mentalism-a-10.html
And as parmenion said, that's also from "Bon" Cassidy, so if you notice a pattern here, go for it! David |

I would add Henning Nelms: Magic and showmanship. It is aimed at conjurors? Doesn't matter, it teaches simply too much.

Funny you mention the Nelms book, Danyel.
I have just begun reading "Magic and Showmanship" and wish I had picked this up much sooner. Just by reading the first few chapters, I have learned a great deal about the scripting, timing and build-up involved to create effective "illusions" and not mere puzzles. The book has also dealt with mentalism quite a bit thus far, which pleasantly surprised me. Back to reading... |

I'd also urge you to check out the guidelines on what you can post in "penny for your thoughts" versus "inner thoughts." it will spare you some aggravation in the future.
