I had a kid up on stage to help out with a routine. This routine has to have him wearing a fedora like I do as part of a "do as I do routine." I take the kids hat off and can tell he is conscious of his hair as he started to look really embarrassed. Without skipping a beat I take off my hat and point to my head and go, "What are you nervous about? You at least HAVE hair." Kid looks up at my bald head and starts to laugh hysterically. Nothing like saving the day by making fun of yourself.

So how have you ever handled situuations like this where a child might be embarrased?

Are you comfortable enough to make fun of yourself to let a child feel more at ease?

Um pretty much make fun of you at every show.

oh crap I just read the title you said make fun of yourself I thought it meant you!

yea Kyle I have several built in lines to make fun of myself as well as if a chance arrises I go for it. why not

to me that's the sign of a great performer. truth is funnier then fiction.

good job. you now need to work that line into the show all the time.

Sam: lol nice. Then at least pay me my "make fun of Kyle" fee. =)

I just felt I needed to do something to help take the heat off the kid and to make him feel comfortable.

Very few people are funnier looking than me. Most people are smarter than me, and just about any "real" magician is more technically skilled than me. I have a LOT of material to work with! Smile

My avatar is actually a picture of me standing on my head! (note the very skinny legs and short arms with only 3 fingers)

With my last name, I have to acknowledge it at the beginning of the show, and everyone has a good laugh.

Half my act is me acting like a moron, doing dumb stuff (AKA Laurel & Hardy style). The kids love to laugh at adults. Here's a funny gag I made up (well I really did this by accident for real, which is how I got the idea). Have an excuse to drop your hat on the ground, then when you bend over to pick it up let your tie droop into the hat, then act like you didn't notice and put your hat on with the tie covering your face.

That's good! I have an idea for a new thread...

Being a large man, or what I like to call calorically challenged, I have to acknowledge my size. Its like Louie Anderson says, "I don't like to make fat jokes but if I didn't you would be out in the audience going, "Does he even know he's fat?"
When I go over my rules, my first rule is "shhhhh". "that's my first rule because even though it looks like more, there's only one of me up here. Which means one voice!" I don't do it for the kids as much as for the adults. I get that initial "Okay, he knows it" laugh and we can all move on.

When I do a certain hat gag in my show, it doesn't tend to muss the kid's hair, but it does look funny. An overly sensitive child may have a problem, so I pick the right kid and make it clear that I was the one who messed up. "Magician In Trouble" scenarios work great for me.

Cripes, my entire act is based on making fun of myself - start to finish.

The only times things work right is when:

a) the kids make it happen
b) a puppet makes it happen
c) I'm telling a story where someone else succeeded

"Adult in trouble" is the principle underlying every routine. And the
kids love it.

Thanks guys. But I guess maybe the question should be changed to ask how do you guys ever handle a situation where a helper may be embarrassed on stage or scared or nervous because of some situation etc.? in my example, the kid was conscious of his hair and I would never have known that up front. But because he was, it caused an awkward situation where I felt I needed to chnage the focus off of him and make sure he felt ok.
