Hey Jimmy,
I've gotten huge benefit from your thoughts spread out in the electronic mess of the Internet and "To Lure With Spectacle and Our Mysterious Society". I'm not gonna be able to attend your lecture but have no doubt that it's the place to be Friday 9/30, @ 8:00 pm. For those that can make it: "BE THERE! BE THERE! BE THERE!" in my most awesome Truck Rally voice.
You know why don't act naive.

Also, this is the first chance anybody has to pick up the new DVD featuring Jimmy, Eric Evans, Kris Bentz and Chanz. I'm not really sure what the title of the DVD is but I've watched it and it's incredible. Jeff McBride watched it and had this to say;
"I was more than impressed with its honesty and intelligence. The 2 camera angels really let you study the show , and the audience. the commentary and intereviews are just great..this is the real deal " |

Ok this is basically going to be a brain dump! I'll try to keep it brief -- head is still hurting from information overload so here it goes.
This wasn't your ordinary run of the mill product pushing dealer demo type lecture! No this was a Q & A type lecture in which most of the other guru's out there would charge several hundreds of dollars to hear. Jimmy, started off by doing his show, he then gave a brief intro then right into the questions and man was there questions. Nothing was off limits either...he discussed his personal life how he got started, how someone looking to perform on the streets should start, three different types of shows on the streets and both the pros and the cons for each one. He talked about his way of building a crowd, setting up a set show, traveling, lodging, money (not how much he made personally but an idea of what you might make and how hard it is going to be to make it). He also talked about charecter building and touched on how to design a show for that particular charecter. Basically it was A to Z that was discussed. I really appreciated the fact that he didn't say do this trick or that trick it was more of a this type of trick or a trick that does x, y, and z. So if you are a what I call a trick monkey or move jock and that is all you want to learn...this ain't for you no offense! I think on 2nd thought I am going to stop here because the rest of the brain dump was what I took away from it and well, I'm not going to give away the barn! I will say that if you are going to be in Nevada and Jimmy does indeed give the lecture out that GO TO IT!!!!! Oh and as far as the products being sold there by Jimmy...there was his book, lecture notes and a 2 DVD set. I read the lecure notes so far and they are well worth the money. I have not started on his book nor did I watch the DVD's so I won't comment on them. |

On 2011-10-03 01:42, gman wrote: I was also at the lecture, and bought the dvd. It features four performers: Jimmy Talksalot, Kris Bentz (a student of Jimmy's), Chanz (also Jimmy's student) and Eric Evans. For each performer, it shows his performance in front of a real, live street audience, including footage of the performer as seen by the audience, and over-the-shoulder footage of the audience watching the performer doing his performance. This is a terrific idea, as it allows you to understand exactly how the audience is forming and responding to different segments of the performer's show. As if this weren't enough, there is another segment of the same footage in which the performer provides voice-over description and analysis of how he handled the audience and responded to specific challenges as they were occurring. This is followed by an interview of each performer in which each performer tells you about his background and some of his philosophy about the street-magician's art and life-style. Finally, there are two bonus segments in which the four performers engage in a four-way discussion of the challenges and issues relating to street performing. It should be noted that none of the performers on the dvd teaches any specific tricks, and, in fact, there is a disclaimer on the dvd stating that the performers reserve all rights to the specific material presented. The intention, instead, is to provide students with a deeper understanding of the principles underlying street performing, not specific tricks. This dvd is unique and a terrific addition to the body of work on street performing. I highly recommend it! Unfortunately, I don't know how you can obtain a copy, but I assume Jimmy Talksalot will be providing more information on its availability at some point. |

The DVDs will be available through Jimmy at both the McBride School in Las Vegas this weekend, and at the Denny and Lee's Magic Studio lecture on October 17th in Vegas. If you cannot attend either of these, Denny has a few in Baltimore.
And for those who couldn't attend, footage was just posted of the beginning of Jimmy's lecture in Baltimore on YouTube. Part 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dw4ub5Gfzzo&sns=em Part 2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfanlv6iWz0&sns=em Enjoy! Kris |
