Man and other Animals - What's the difference?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

On this plane, hard to say. On other planes, we are reliably informed that the immortal soul of animals lacks a certain element or level that is found in the human soul.

IPhones. Other Than that there really is very little difference. We are reliably informed that we are both mortal beasts with no place to go after our demise.

Only Man has the capacity for complex language (as far as we're aware), including storytelling. And the capability to read and write. Being able to learn from others without direct experience, by these means, is an incredible evolutionary advantage. Pile on top of that the social repercussions of shared oral and written histories and myths, and we're leaps and bounds beyond animals.

Oh yeah, I think there's also clothing; I'm not aware of any other species that uses clothing (without being dressed up by an owner.)

Caught an interview with Jane Goodall a couple of months ago. At one point she said that when she first started working with chimpanzees she expected that they would be like all the good parts of humans, with the nastiness of culture removed. What did she find? That they were just like us, nastiness and all.

Man seems more inclined to make things up to make themselves feel better.

Man also seems content to make up women to make themselves feel better. Smile

Humans are really just another form of animal. And latest estimates indicate there ar 8.7 million species on the planet - all of them uniquely adapted to their environment. Oh sure, humans build computers and cars and space shuttles. But birds can migrate thousands of miles, bees build complex structures, bats have radar, some lizards regenerate limbs, spiders construct elaborate webs, etc. It wouldn't be immediately evident to an alien visitor that of all the different lifeforms on the planet, that humans are the best suited for survival, or the most socially cooperative, or the most impressive in their natural abilities. In fact, they may be far more interested in dolphins than in, say, Charlie Sheen.

Bat's use sonar not radar. Lizards regenerate tails I don't think they do legs.

As far as Dolphins are concerned mix them with Tatar sauce and they tasted just like tuna.

Yes I am being factitious on porpoise.

There are many differences in degree; the primary difference in kind is that other animals don't spend any time contemplating the ways in which they may be fundamentally different from other species.

Do you consider yourself to be a pet, farm, zoo or wild animal?
