I am thinking about putting a small show together using nothing but playing cards. I would love to put together a real jaw dropping act I can take any where any time from a deck of cards or at least seem l ike a single dek of cards.
Any ideas on sources. I know Jay Ayres has a series of ebooks on the subject any other sources? I only want to do it if I can find really STRONG material. |

I've decided to buy his Noetic License.
For a rat $35 not only do you get a fully scripted and blocked 50 minute act, you get his well-regarded card stack. Sounds like a like a bargain to me. I'll let you know what I think after I get it.

A good presentation of Out of This World never fails. Effects with Koran's 101 or 5 Star decks (see the Mysterious Black Envelope on Eugene Burger's Presentations DVD). Kenton Kneppers Kollosal Killer. Simon Aronson has great stuff--like Shuffle Bored. And most effects with a stacked deck (BCS, Stebbins, etc.) Card calling, impossible discoveries etc., many of which can be found on Richard Osterlind's Mind Mystery DVDs.

Should you like a mysterious approach, go for 'Hypno mental self working card tricks' by Paul Voodini. Technically simple, they have a stunning effect. Good showmanship and acting capabilities required.

Method is irrelevant. Read one or two of Jays things so you get yourself in the right frame of mind. You could do one, or two things only during a whole act. But turn the whole thing into a performance.
Figuring out 'how to do it' is the least of your concerns. The question is, if you were watching some guy trying to entertain you with a deck of cards for an hour, what would he be doing? Once you've figured that out, the methods are probably really simple. The difficulty is creating entertainment and keeping the audience involved. |

(And I know you know that but I thought I'd say it out loud anyway, simply because 'Osterlind's BCS' is not the answer you are probably looking for).

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess what I am looking for is an act I can just pull out of my pocket and have some fun with anywhere anytime but also blow the audience who ever they may be away. I can entertain a small group at a meeting or whatever usually jusy by goofing about with no effects. Its something Ive always been able to do. Ive not done really many shows over the last few years. Im just looking to get back into the mindset with something new and have some fun. I am booked into doing a few talks for business networks and thoughg it would be good to just have fun with them instead of the usual talks.,.

Lewis jones' 7th heaven has many wonderful things that you could create your own set with...pretty much all of it is with borrowed objects and mainly cards...
but, surely you know the classics and how to use cards MP - whats wrong with those?

You know Iain,,
That feeling you get now and then when you think about doing something new. The anticipation, the build up and the creation? And the "search" for something new? I guess really what this is about is that feeling rather than the actual outcome. The truth is I probably have MORE material already than I will ever use. Even now I have dipped into my collection and realise I have stuff I haven't even read in depth. I think I need to stop and just look through what I already have and realise this is about experiencing an emotional state rather than the true need to buy more materia which will just end up locked away with most of all the other stuff I have.... I already have some amazing material that I have never used. Its time to just enjoy it... |

I like to incorporate a pendulum into the mix of playing cards. NS has some excellent ideas in his latest book that can be done with a borrowed deck.

For me, the biggest challenge (and the most fun) is in creating a script and plot that clearly ties it all together. In fact, THAT is what each book in my Act-Series is all about. Now, if I just get my hands on that guy Jay who keeps getting credit for my stuff... Warm regards, Mick Ayres

Don't know that as an audience member I could sit through 50 minutes of card mentalism . . . and I already like cards and mentalism. Enjoy the challenge!

It all depends upon the performer, of course.

Paul Vigil has a few things worth looking at. His "Sympathy for the Devil" is a personal favorite. I agree Osterlind teaches plenty of strong effects that you can do with any stack. Doug Dyment has a lovely stack as well from his book Tricyclic and many people prefer it, though you'll still want to learn effects from Osterlind.
There's a series of effects I can do with a brand new deck of cards handed to me by a stranger. I unwrap the new deck, quickly shuffle the cards a few times, tell him a card or two he's thinking of through a thought reading process, intuitively guess the colors of a large block of cards someone else has shuffled, then give a third person the ability to intuit the colors herself from a shuffled deck (OOTW). It all occurs in a time frame of about 15 minutes and uses only one new, borrowed deck. The lectures, books and DVDs I purchased in order to learn to do the above cost me over $250 plus plenty of practice time over several years. Even so all the effects are pretty standard. They're wonderful refinements of some of my favorite standard effects and that's all I need. Seems to me, though, that anyone can compile several of their favorite effects together and do them. What Mick Ayres, Paul Vigil and others have to offer is strong effects structured into a professional show and THAT'S what I really want to learn from them when I buy their material. I want to see a showman who sticks to one or two themes, entertains me, challenges my assumptions, makes me laugh, builds suspense, all those things. Then I want to pick his act apart step by step to learn why it's so good. I may not use his material but I hear such nice things about Mick Ayres. After twenty years carrying the pasteboards I hardly use cards anymore, otherwise I know I'd buy up all his offerings. In your case Mindpunisher I'm pretty sure you can already put together an act and it sounds like you're just looking for strong ingredients. Correct? Have you decided on a premise like mind-control or coincidence?
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.
