Had my second and third paid birthday parties today. They seemed to go well despite one being outside in the wind.

Thanks everyone here for the help in getting this started.

Outside in the wind brings back some memories! I still do the occasional outdoor show, but what I've learned since the beginning! Silks flying into bushes, things blowing over! My biggest lesson was when a mom put me in front of a duck pond with ducks running all around, and the kids were all around 3 years old. I learned then, I can't compete with ducks. Never again!

To paraphrase Ken Scott, I don't do outdoor shows. It's in my contract. Every once in a while I break down and do one, but it seems like I always regret it. The last one was 98 degrees in the sun - no wind, but it was miserable.

Same here, I do a handful of outdoor shows a year, but only under certain circumstances. Otherwise, my contract states the performance area must be indoors!

Congrats on the shows!

Congratulations teachersears, the first shows can be a bit nerve-racking. I did an outside show on Saturday at a park, wasn't too windy thankfully - there have been some where my magic cape goes flying back and I end up looking more like Batman, than a Magician Smile

Thanks all. Did another outside show today (for three kids - good night). I think I'm done with outside kid shows. So windy. No more.

Jim, and others, how does such a contract work? Is that something you email the client? So far I've just worked via word of mouth. Easing into some marketing and just curious. Thanks.

You bet- when I book a show, I email them a "performance agreement". If you have a regular email address, send it to me via PM and I'll send you a copy of it.

The contract is nice to have - it has all the info regarding the show, so if you have it with you, you know where to go, whom to call, etc. But even more importantly, it lets the client know that you are "bona-fide" and that you will indeed show up!

I do inside shows, outside shows, restaurant shows, auditorium shows, country club shows, Mall shows, church shows, synagog shows, Pizza parlor shows, cub scout shows, parades, banquets, school shows, back yard BBQ shows, and every other kind of show you can think of. About the only kind of shows I don't do are free shows. My family likes to eat every day, so I turn nothing down.

Don't listen to any of the bad advise offered here, do them all.
