Hey Greg,
can you explain (if possible) the process you go though when you sit down to create a new routine (as opposed to just getting an idea without trying? |

Danny is a very close friend who must already know my creative process, so I think he's asking this question for the benefit of the readers. And also for my benefit, since I learn as well when committing these thoughts to print.
That aside, I don't have one specific formula for creating routines. as inspiration can come from anywhere, anytime. Sometimes I deliberately create a routine from whole cloth without any apparent connection line of thought from previous ideas. Or, sometimes I simply modify an existing routine to suit my style, character and personality. Which, by the way, I highly recommend for anything that you perform. ALWAYS try to put your own signature or spin on a routine to make it your own. For example, Danny has a gangster character that he uses on stage to GREAT effect, called Gino Cappuccino. Within that character, Danny has original effects and modified effects that suit a mobster perfectly. In fact, his character is so strong and fully realized that he could beat the audience to the magic shop and do the trick straight out of the box and make it KILL - which is what Gino threatens to do often anyway. : ) For me specifically, I only choose or create routines that suit my stage character, which is a con man. I call myself The Honest Con Man. So, everything I originate for that show is about pick-pocketing, card-sharking, short-changing and psychological deception. It's a "criminal act," if you will. For close-up, I'm equally stringent with my trick selections, even without having that perfectly defined stage character. Just being me, I still create effects that suit what I want to project about myself. That's why I always ask WWJD? What would James do? No matter how strong an effect is, I couldn't picture .007 in a million years doing a sponge ball routine at the Baccarat table in Monte Carlo to impress a Bond babe. More specifically about the creation of a routine, sometimes I simply brute force what I want to achieve and see where it goes. From there I'll take it to my brainstorm group, who are the top names in magic with selfless and giving mindsets. After batting it around a while in my mind and in these sessions, THAT is where the real magic happens. Before you know it, you've gone from conception to completion and it's ready for public consumption. Ta-da! |

Being an English major, I need to slow down my typing, as I'm finding grammatical errors everywhere. I'll give me a C- for that last transmission!

I am big into character development and since you mentioned it I have to ask.
Is your "stage" character the same as your close up character? How did you come about being the "character" you are on stage? Is your character essentially GW extended? What would your recomend for us peeps out here on character development? I've seen both of your guys acts and characters....love it... Thanks

And on the matter of new routines....you have a trick, you know the moves. Tada! Now comes the tricky bit....how do you script it?
Even to the basics of what format do you use to write one. (like a play?) |
