Funny isn't? Really think about that one.
If you have a job, and are passed over for a promotion, due to lack of skill, work ethic and experience, what do you do? Do you get mad and quit? What if you really love that job? So, you're not quitting. Hmmmmm...what to do? Do you work harder, and smarter and show your boss that you do deserve that promotion and that raise? NO! That would be silly and far too much work. Here's the answer!!!!! Promote yourself!!! That's right!!! Just go ahead and do it. Show up to work the next day and do your normal job (probably poorly) but just make up a new name tag!!!! That's it! Go ahead just put whatever title you want under your name! Now, you're not getting paid anymore money, and you're not doing a better job, nor do you have any responsibility or experience but hey, at least you have the title now!!!! Go around your work telling folks what to do and giving advice! Write memos, and mission statements! Give out new work orders. Tell them you are their new boss! They might just go for it! Then again, they may go for it for only a while (about five minutes), then they will get wise and just begin to believe that you are completely nuts. It might take a few minutes or even a few hours, but it will happen. Now what to do with a nutters like you? Just ignore you in case you snap and come back with an AK/47? Do they actually do what you tell them? NO! More than likely they will go to the real management and you will be fired and expelled from the premises for being a complete whacko who didn't deserve to get the promotion so you went and gave it to yourself and acted like a jackhole. They wont be able to wrap their heads around what you did. They will talk about this in meetings. They will make jokes about what you did. No matter what they say and do after you're gone wont matter because you will be gone. Goodbye. All of this seems crazy doesn't it? Why would somebody think that this would work? Thing like this just don't happen like this in the real world. Promote yourself....Ha! It's funny isn't it? Now I ask you, why on Earth do we put up with it in our world? |

Missing all the funny here.
Don't know that there are lot of buskers working for the Man. What's your beef with self promotion?
You know why don't act naive.

I think what bobby means isn't related to buskers working for the man. that's just his metaphore. What he really means is that there are people going out there and saying they and good and great, but not actually putting the work and effort into truly becoming great. Then getting mad that they don't make the big hats get the raise or that promotion.
Hes compairing the lack of effort from individuals and expecting it to be great to a lazy office worker doing that. It just don't work. You don't get somethin out of nothin as the ol sayin goes Least that's my take. Correct me if I'm a idiot bobby xD Cheers scottie! |

Well, I think it could be directly linked to buskers/performers. Could be way off track but I'm thinking the analogy is there. But the whole idea of promoting yourself is humourous, in an off-beat way.
But I think I do see the similarities..... |

Actually I think you could apply the whole concept/anology to this very site. Or maybe I've gone way out on a tangent LOL

Yeah fellas...it was a way to compare two worlds. One world- of the office worker, or any job for that matter and our world as entertainers.
Its funny what we will allow compared to what the "real world" will allow. isn't it? |

HerbLarry Special user Poof! 731 Posts |
My thoughts are the real world doesn't "allow", things are what they are.
The entertainment industry is THE place for self promotion, the kind Bobby speaks of. Sizzle and steak come to mind. How often does the sizzle get it done? Plenty, though sizzle has to keep on the move, changing with the fast paced "what's in now". Steak works because it's steak, and people like steak. I like serving steak.

I think what Bobby is saying is people are saying it's steak - and it's tofu - with no sizzle.

And people expecting steak don't pay for tofu. So if your sign says T bone and you give em preprocess tofu in a box vaguly shapped like something off a cow, good luck payin the bills or making friends.

I kind of missed the point on this one, as well.,..

The point is this....
If you work in an environment and are not one of the bosses and are not considered by your peers or others to be "boss-Material" AND you don't have the experience to be that Boss then you cant very well just decide to be a boss and change name tags now can you? It's what I see a lot of in the performance world. Someone comes along and is obviously very new to everything and within a day or two they are trying to give advice, take on the role of a leader when in fact they are completely full of it. They in essence PROMOTE THEMSELVES to their own level of incompetence. They put on a new name tag and start talking the talk when they CANNOT walk the walk. One fella in particular is from northern Ohio and has spent a lot of time "promoting?" himself to other Magi. He drops many many names and even tried dropping names to me while in front of others...the really funny part of it all was when he was talking out his butt about being best buddies with a certain well known fella, that particular fella called me. :0 I then asked my friend of he ever heard of the joker in front of me...he had not. He was trying to make himself seem "above" everyone around him, and was even giving advice to folks... Am I making sense here about "Promoting yourself?" |

Now I get it. But, it happens in the regular 9-5 world too.
I remember some woman on Trumps TV show talking about the saying "Fake it 'til you make it." You're offered a job. You don't have the skill set but the money is too good to pass up so you take the job and fake it until you figure everything out or until they see you for the incompetent imposter that you are. People lie on resumes all the time. By the way, after she explained "fake it 'til you make it" to Trump, he fired her.

Here we are talking about someone coining themselves as competent at something; yet, they are not. I think in the end they will evetually be found out as you mentioned above. But what can we do about it in this industry; busking specifically? I think just go up and have a conversation with the guy/gal and see where their perception is coming from. From there you could probably, tactifully, tell them what is being percieved....I'm sure it's easier said than done... or am I still off base?

This post reminds me of a cartoon I saw recently: http://www.gapingvoidgallery.com/gallery......um=email
In the caption to the bottom left of the cartoon he says: "There’s something very funny and slightly tragic about a guy who tries very hard to command respect, but fails miserably…" |

Funny how you like to twist things out of context. The rest of the caption is:
But there’s a lot we can learn from this kind of person. I think one loses a part of him or her self when trying to hold too tightly to perceived cookie-cutter executive designs and it can lead a person into a corporate black hole for which there is no return. This can be a real challenge—looking outside the box to find new ways of team leading that doesn’t result in merciless ridicule. The main idea is to just relax. Strong leaders stand out for new ways of thinking and get their team involved and excited about work. So this cartoon is meant to remind is to just step back and not take things so seriously all the time. Adding a little humor to life is a good thing and it’s important to be able to laugh at yourself sometimes too.
Nothing would get done at all, if man waited so long that no one could find fault with it.
