Isn't the chinese egg mat, about the same as a mat to roll sushi with?

It is pretty close. The egg mat is a more tightly woven version. That is it masks what needs to be masked well and the sushi mat has more "windows" showing what shouldn't be shown. How's that for cryptic?

Actually, it is the size of a placemat for table setting.

Which is what it was. They were very common up to the 1950s. My mother used them nightly for family dining. Good placemats came out for guests. If I remember correctly they cost about a dollar for a dozen back in those days. That's probably why they got turned into a magic trick. They were ready made and cheap. Wooden "starter eggs" from farm stores were the eggs being used. A loop was tacked to one end of the wooden egg. Those eggs were pretty cheap too.

You could use this, and make your own:

Or you could just buy the real deal.
Here is a sample: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042890RU/ref=......042890RU and this one works fine: http://www.petcarerx.com/Catalog/Product......&id=1776 or any of these: http://www.dollartree.com/new-arrivals-s......ndex.pro

The reason most sushi mats would not work as well is because the cording that holds the bamboo slats together is thicker than that used for placemats. That thickness creates those windows, but it also gives a sushi mat the flexibility it needs to do what it is made for, and that thicker string also makes is more durable.
If you have a Pier 1 Imports, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Crate and Barrel or World Market store near you, they all usually have a great selection of perfectly suitable mats for this effect - I have recently seen some of the mats in the links that Harry provided (thanks Harry!) in two of those stores. Occasionally you might find a suitable mat like these in a candle store. |

By the way, the edges of my Pier One mat were too floppy as they came from the store. Stuck a couple of wooden shishkabob skewers in ends to stiffen them. That allows for proper handling of the mat as it important that the ends do not flop around.

This is the Chinese Egg Bag which is not really a bag at all but a mat. Hobson's would be for a different post.

It shows you how we magicians think. I was in the store and they advertized Zombies and of course looked to see if it was the floating ball trick. I knew better, but for that split second, I was overtaken by the magic bug. I guess it's one of the reasons we all do magic.

Years ago I saw a magic mat with tubes about the size of slightly-larger-than-average drinking straws, but with thicker walls. These were at both ends of the mat. When rolled, the performer produced a flower from the tube. When rolled with the other tube in the center, he got another flower.
The flowers were very small and flimsy, having to fit in the small tubes. Still, it looked good. Several years later I saw one with the ends of the mat rolled to make larger tubes for bigger flowers. It seemed too obvious for may taste. |

Need a routine instead of a trick?
1. "Look I got another parking ticket!" (Show it, tear it up and toss it into a brandy snifter.) 2. Swirl the paper bits into an egg. (Via Ford's Egg - Dan Ford, Box 204, Essex, Illinois 60935) 3. Roll the egg out of the glass (replaced by a ceramic egg gimmicked for Chinese Egg bag --- see jazzy snazzy in this thread above) 4. Put glass down and pick up the place mat (and ditching) to start CEB routine. 5. Conclude the CEB substituting the real egg (Also from a dropper) 6. Pick up glass again (while ditching place mat and "luggage") 7. Crack the real egg into the glass. YOU ARE CLEAN! There, did I give the routine without exposing the workings of the "tricks"? Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- Notice that you start with an empty glass on a place mat. That is very harmless. The parking ticket can be a looser lottery ticket, message from your ex-wife requesting more money, Thank You note from the IRS, etc.) |

Dan - you will get another from me - I use the Ford egg for Toilet Paper to Egg by Jarle Leirpoll, sometimes in conjunction with the Chinese Egg Bag and other times, just by itself.
Bob - that is an excellent routine! |
