This is a brilliant bit of thinking from the equally brilliant Mr Gary Jones...I remember it from his lecture notes as Starter for 10, way back in 2001. Costas has done a great job and anyone who knows the original is going to love this updated version...I love this, it's very easy to do, no skill required and I was able to perform it 30 seconds after taking it out of the packet...It gets a great reaction, my partner Ruth, said WOW that's really good! I can't wait to try it on a lay audience at my next gig, IMHO it's a real worker.

Got a few of these in the post this morning ready for my Lecture next week.
This new version really is awesome. So well made, you can stare at it close up and it just looks just like a pad. There are so many ways to go with this you will be coming up with your own ideas and performing it 30 seconds after watching the DVD. So organic quick and simple. LOVE IT.

I posted a review of this over at my blog, I have pasted it below, in short though, this is brilliant, buy it when it is released!
Costas was very kind to send me a review copy of Gary’s new release Noted. You can see the demo in the link above. This was originally published in Gary’s lecture notes as Starter for 10. The original used a simple basic gimmick, but Magic Tao have taken the idea and greatly improved it. The basic idea behind the trick is that you walk up to a table holding a note-pad and ask if you can take their order, you then change the note-pad into a deck of cards and you can start your magic. Just recently I have been looking into and playing about with magical ways to produce a deck of cards, including John Carney’s Chill Pack, David Regal’s Sudden Deck and Alex Lourido’s Instant Deck. These are all brilliant methods but I think there is something fun, simple and organic about Gary’s method that means it will probably be the one I use most often. Whenever you see Gary’s name on a product you know it is going to be a worker, and this is no exception. My mind is already racing on presentational ideas. I am not too keen on the advertised way of pretending to be a waiter and asking if you can take their order. But I am already thinking about using this in conjunction with Jon Allen’s opening line of ‘Is this the fun table?’ I can see myself walking up with notepad and pen in hand, saying I am just double checking, ‘Is this table 10?’ ‘It is, I heard this is the fun table?’ ‘In that case maybe you would like to see some magic?’ As you transform the note-pad into your cards, and effortlessly start the first effect. Without giving too much away, there is a certain something you need to get rid of, in the DVD Costas suggest using the old, getting rid of the jokers line, but for me I think I will just have a card chosen, and as they are showing it around, I will turn my back and ditch the necessary. The beauty of the gimmick is that it is as thin as a card and you can easily manipulate and show the deck, and have a card chosen for your first trick, all whilst the gimmick is still in the deck. The up-dated gimmick has been made to look like a notepad, and I have been fooling myself in the mirror, this does look just like a spiral-bound notepad, it really is awesome. It is also plastic coated, so you can write on this with a white-board marker. Gary has some great ideas for this including an invisible deck routine, and drawing a picture of a deck actually onto the notepad. The angles are also great, the deck is totally covered, and there is little chance of flashing. I am struggling to come up with any negative aspects to this, however a few things to be aware of, you are probably going to need to open with this, as I can see it would be a little tricky in most working situations to put this in the middle of a set, but then why would you, I think it is designed as an opener, and that is how it should be used. Also you are going to need some experience of misdirection, the handling of the gimmick is pretty much self-working but it does need some misdirection, even if it is just asking a question as in the Jon Allen line above, you need something to cover the change, but this shouldn’t be an issue with some thought. As I say not negative aspects, but things you should know before purchase. The DVD is well produced, if on the short side, however you don’t really need to know all that much, it is what it is, a very clever idea, open to lots of interpretation, and personalisation, a wonderful opening effect to establish yourself. The Gimmick as already stated is well made, and very deceptive, I just hope from all the use I can for-see this getting, that it will last, or that Magic Tao will continue to make these, as I can see this being one of my openers for quite some time. In short I can’t wait to go and road-test this and if you want a method to magically produce your cards, this is one of the easiest, most practical, workable, commercial ways that I have seen, recommended! |

If your using the any signed card to any spectators wallet utillity maybe the gaff could be ditched using this methid, if it is the same size as a card.
Just a thought. Carl. |

That would be no problem carlwag, great idea. I used this a fair bit over the weekend and just kept it in the deck for a while. I think a spectator could even pick it and not know.
I have even done this effect in reverse and it works great. Lee.

While this is a perfect opener for card effects, with a little management you can get into this at any point. Lee Smith showed me his handling where the pack of cards turns into a note pad, the pack is reproduced from his pocket (there's more to it than that, there's also a prediction and other stuff going on). Great blog by the way Richard, some excellent stuff on there. Gary Jones.

I recieved this today, the gimmick is not far from what I thought it would be, it is well made and very realistic.
Regards ditching the gimmick I'm not sure you would have to, well not straight away anyway and as lee said if you keep it in the pack you can do the reverse effect. For the price this is brilliant, again great thinking from gary and also it is the first time I used tao magic and not the last. Carl. |

So practical, so commerical and the gimmick is great quality.
Although the DVD is short, it does teach it well, and I think that is all one needs. The Gimmick is SO realistic, and it looks and feels brilliant. The fact that you can write on it with a whiteboard creates endless presentational possibilities. In addition, the gimmick is super - easy to ditch, and the reactions you get are very good. Overall, it is a short DVD and a simple product, so not too much to say, except for if you want a commercial, easy to perform, brilliant opener for only £10 including gimmick and DVD - WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR! In addition, Gary is a brilliant guy and produces great tricks - so go support this 'Modern Tommy Wonder'! Best, Kyle |

I think this is brilliant. The gimmick is really well made and the instructional dvd is; well short and concise although I'd be surprised if too many people need the dvd. The fact you can write on the card is a really nice touch. Your deck is dirty but in a good way. By that I mean you are in no rush to get rid of the gimmick and as an added bonus it allows you to vanish a card. My initial routine goes somehting like, them naming any card and telling them you will mnake it appear. I then as a joke produce the whole deck, pull out their card and get it signed. You can then use the gimmick to make the card vanish in the deck. As a finale I pull the signed card out of my wallet.
Absolutely love it and for £10, I am very pleased. Great stuff. |

What a brilliant idea Paul, you're right you can use the gimmick to vanish a card, thank you for that!
I think I had better have a chat to Magic Tao and maybe put all these ideas onto a longer DVD, and put the price up Gary Jones.

What is it about a magician's wife / partner / close friend etc that makes them such a tough crowd?
Is it that you've shown them you're twenty thousand phase ambitious card routine, twenty thousand times... because you've slightly changed one of the phases...? Perhaps its because they have seen more magic than is healthy in several lifetimes...? OK you get the idea. It takes a lot to fool a magician's wife / partner etc. It takes even more to entertain them. Cue the postie dropping a package through the door. Open to reveal a copy of Noted (thanks to Gary's competition). 20 minutes later, the dashing Charlie approaches his beloved wife, clutching a notepad and pen. "Hey hun, name any card" The four of spades is mentioned. Charlie writes it down on his notepad, recaps the pen and >>Kapow!!<< the note pad is a pack of cards He spreads through the pack and exclaims "yup, that's the one card that's missing" (thank you cull and bottom palm) Charlie 'retrieves' the four of spades from the pocket "did you see the card come from the pocket?" The selected card card is placed back into the pocket so the miraculous reveal can be slowly re-enacted... (ditching the gimmick). Mrs Charlie is overwhelmed with wonder! OK perhaps a bit of embelishment. The truth is, the wife was genuinely surprised and laughed out loud. She has seen card from pocket many times, but the 'Noted' eyecandy at the begining completely changed the feel of the effect. The gimmick has been well described. The DVD is functional (just). The gimmick takes up next to no pocket space - easy to set, ditch and reset. I'll be using this and playing with different presentations. Now why aren't you checking out Gary's 'no frills lecture' DVD? Its chock full of goodness! Charlie |
