I'm not a beginner, exactly -- but I'm coming back to magic after more than a decade away from it.
Here's the deal: I bought a two-pack of poker-size Bicycle decks at the local drug store when I was waiting for a prescription to be filled. (They caught my eye, and I got to thinking "I wonder if I can still do any of that sleight of hand stuff?") I find that the cards fan and spread nicely when I first take them out of the box, but after a little bit of card-control practice, they start sticking together. They won't fan smoothly, and shuffles intended to put the controlled card somewhere other than the very top or bottom of the deck become unreliable. If I put the deck away for a bit and come back to it, the problem is gone...but as soon as they warm up a bit, it's back. What's the solution? Fanning powder? Higher quality decks? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Frenchdrop - Unfortunatly it sounds like you have made such good use of the cards, they simply need changing.
Use the old deck for effects like 'card warp', or practising the mercury fold. |

Thanks, Shakey! I do love the Card Warp. In fact, these two decks I bought are both missing their Jokers, sacrificed to the Card Warp. Now that I'm dipping my toes back into magic, I'm intrigued by some of the new versions I've seen in online catalogs like Tannen's. The original Card Warp blew me away the first time I saw it in person. I couldn't believe how simple it was when I bought the booklet and got it home.
These cards didn't seem to last long, if they are just worn out. Maybe I need to start buying them in bulk, instead of two-packs! Are there better decks for card handling than your basic, drug-store Bicycle-back Poker decks? Thanks again.

Bicycle for me really are the best cards to use.
I get it when the cards stick together, its just like sweat and dirt. If you can buy them in bulk, go for it, they'll last you ages(: |

Fanning powder or talc will give them a little more life if you want to go through the trouble. Put about 1/4 cup of powder in a one gallon zip lock bag. Add the cards and mix thoroughly. Remove the cards and blow them off one at a time - you may have to take a cloth and gently wipe some of them. Put the deck back together.
