All the workers,
Do you find value in having a website that potential clients can visit? A simple question but my marketing company I use (for business cards and ect) have been selling me on the idea....but its not cheap and I don't want to make my own (no idea how to do it well and make it look good). Thanks for any responce. Respect, Billy |

Yes!
This new site with full Wordpress technology (to easily update all content) cost me $110 by a professional - http://www.athletemotivationalspeaker.com/ Go to Guru.com and you can have people bid on your project. Could be fancier I suppose...but it does it's job. I don't consider that a lot of money. |

Yep, I'm guessing your marketing company is quoting you more substantial dollar? As Scott has shown you can get something basic made in wordpress very cheaply - more if you want custom layouts or complex graphics. If you have a mediocum of technical ability its possible to learn to do the same in a day and cost only around $10 and a few $ per month hosting.
If your marketing company is offering services along side the construction of the website - like search engine optimization or similar be very skeptical. Are they confident that these services will actually translate into income for you? Visitors alone are meaningless.

You see their portfolio, reviews, history, etc for each bidder. Also, your money goes into an escrow account right on Guru that only gets released to the hired person once you are happy. If there is ever an issue, Guru will step in and determine if the agreement has been broken and who gets the money (but the reviews should tell you who the good ones are ahead of time). There will be a wide range of abilities and prices offered. You choose who you want to hire. |

Mr. Burton,
I imagine I am paying a bit too much, however there is something special about walking into their business...they have always treated me well and I like the human on human interaction. However, the diffrence in price for website work is enough to make me rethink that Respect, Billy |

Web sites do not have to be expensive and I must say I can't imagine not having one these days. Truth be told, it's expected. It's as much a part of basic business as a name, business card to fax machine.
I believe if you do not have one, you are not a professional. Plus it's cheaper than buying printed promo and the cost of postage. It's essential for lead gen marketing as well. Anyone that pays hundreds or thousands of dollars for a web site is being taken for a ride. For a few bucks a month and maybe a one time design fee you can be up and running for next to nothing. It's really a no-brainer. |

Did mine myself. Cost me nothing apart from hosting and domain names. Shop around. Put a post in Tricky Business, there are many magicians that do web design. Try these guys too...

I have two sites.
One for magic, which is okay but not that good (amazingly I've been hired because I had the best website of various groups, ...I guess theirs were really bad!) One for mentalism, which I'm still working on but which I'm very happy with so far. For both of these I pay something like $5 a year for the domain name and about $5 a month for the website hosting. They would be better if I had them done professionally, but I also like that I can very easily go into the page and fix or change anything (small or big) right away. I know some with professionally done sites that they can't change with out $ and time.

I've done projects that took 5 people working around the clock for four months to complete. That was, of course, many thousands of dollars, but no one was being taken for a ride. If however you are an individual who is not a big corporate brand and needs to get a web presence set up, you don't need to spend more than a couple hundred dollars to do that. That's for sure. There are some nice templates out there. By "template" I mean a preexisting design and a basic content engine. They have a cookie cutter look (because they are cookie cutter), but you can get a clean and professional one that will do what you need. You drop in some photos and it takes on some personality. For the price, it's the right call for almost everyone. If you want a world class brand and you need some custom business logic implemented, that's another matter. This is not going to apply to many individual performers here, of course. ellusionist.com, outlaw-effects.com, yes. Banachek.com, maybe. |

I was speaking from the perspective about someone who has no web presence and is seeking to have a basic promotional web site. No flash, bells and whistles, but a basic web site other than a do it yourself generic text web site. He doesn't seem at the point of branding or trying to attain a top level, glossy site.

I respect everyones opinion, however the idea of using a template or doesn't sit well with me for some reason. don't get me wrong! Im not a big hot shot performer (I live in Iowa, lol), however I just feel like if I want to do something...i kinda want it done really well, ecspecially if its as important and represents me.

One thing to keep in mind is the sheer variety in the look and feel of a site based on a template. Most modern wordpress templates come with customisable features to make the site your own. With a popular content management system (CMS) like Wordpress you also get security, updates and support that might be missing from a custom build. Another thing to consider is the ongoing costs - with a custom build you might find it difficult to update the site regularly, and you may be tied to the supplier who developed it. With an open source solution like Wordpress you can go to any supplier to develop and implement new features or updates in the future.
The best thing to do might be to create your own list or specification of what you need the site to do, and then someone with a little more technical knowledge can help identify the best solution. Feel free to PM me if you have any specific questions. |

Justhost.com is where I did mine, off a template but only costs like 7 dollars a month.

I wouldn't get too hung up about using templates. There are so many of them - and often they include options that can quite radically change how they appear anyway.
You could look at something like the Thesis theme for wordpress - it is more of a 'framework' and that would give you the best of both worlds. You would have the stability of wordpress with a well supported theme but also the potential for high levels of customization. |
