I'm guessing that you probably did know where the water yourself. James Randi and Derren Brown have given very clear demonstrations of how the effect can be manipulated and it's lack of veracity, but still, an interesting first hand anecdote.

Yes, you are correct as we had an idea as to somewhat where the main was about. In other words we knew it was in an eight or so foot span from where we were looking.

On a similar note, you might be able to use a "dowsing fork" for your effect. A bit of back story, the dowsing fork was my first exposure to dowsing, rather than the metal rods. If you've never seen one, it is just a curved forked branch from a willow or hazel tree. As you go over water or what ever you are looking for it will twitch or bend it the direction it wants you to go. It takes a little practice to get the hold right for it to work. Howver, depending on your persona or your effect, it might be a powerful addition.

My aunt works as a psychic and she uses downsing rods, a very cool prop.

I've recommended it before but George Anderson's Magic Digest has a great introduction to Dowsing Rods, and instructions on how to make your own.

Downsing rods is a great tool. My grand father taught me how to use when I was 9 years old. Now, I use it with mentalism and it's really great.

Never thought of using dowsing rods. Somehow it seems it would be harder to "sell" to an audience than a pendulum.

Here is a funny thing that can be done for a funny bit using downsing rods. It is around the minute mark if you can’t wait. I thought it was funny.

Dousing is what you do to a fire. You might uncover more resources online if you search for dowsing.

Unbelievable! Of course you are right Gordon. But it was spelled "dousing" in the first post and everybody just seemed to follow suit.
(Although occasionally I soak the nerf balls on the ends of my dowsing rods with kerosene and light them, thus requiring that the dowsing rods be doused.) Good thoughts, Bob |

Wow, that's hilarious; I had no clue the entire thread I'd been calling them dousing rods. Google and it's autocorrect.

Dowsing rods are easy to accept; many people have already heard of them, or at the very least, dowsing for water; and they get a bit of a pseudo scientific air. Furthermore they work well in a spectators hands and are arguably more visible then a pendulum's movement.

In my experience with the rods, they are far more sensitive to a spectator's IMR (involuntary muscular response) than a pendulum. It actually takes a bit of steadiness and concentration to get them to stay still!
Here's an effect title for you. You can work out the presentation for yourself: "Dowsing for Dollars" Good thoughts, Bob |

It strikes me that the mini-dowsing rods would be effective to use in Mr. Cassidy's 'A Rat in the Desert' routine from his excellent ebook "The Pendulum of Fate".
Especially apropos since you are attempting to find a container of water and the rods are associated with the finding of water. The ebook, by the way, is on the magicpendulums.com website. Best, Andre
