Does the shaker have to have its cap on the whole time? or can you still use its effect whilst the cap is off?

The cap is part of the gimmick. So it must be there... Actually if they can provide with non gimmick salt shaker will be good, allowing us to do more routine.

Unrelated question, but I dread starting another thread for just one trick:
Where can I get an gimmicked twin of the shaker? Please don't say, "Try a hardware store." I'm hoping one of you has run into it at a chain store and recognized it, or knows for a fact that some magic supply house sells them. Thanks!
