For the love of god, please don't turn this into a political thread rehashing old disputes regarding Jamie Schoolcraft and Todd Lassen. I have one very specific question. For those who have played around with unexpanded shell sets made by each of these fine coin craftsmen, can you tell a difference in the feel of the shrunken, re-milled coins? Specifically, do the re-milled coins of one or the other seem to palm better because of a sharper cut in the re-milling? I played around with a Schoolcraft set at Jamie's convention booth recently, and the coins seemed to almost cling to my palm because of the sharp re-milling on the shaved coins. I recently purchased a previously owned soft Morgan set that I thought was a Schoolcraft set, but turned out to be a Lassen set (long story). These coins don't seem to have the same type of "cling" when I palm them, but I'm wondering if my memory is just playing tricks on me. Thanks in advance for any help here.

Before moving to Colorado Todd Lasson was a member of my club. His stuff is top quality and I'd say that he's one of the best...not THE best, but one of the best. It's like being a Ford or Chevy owner, everybody likes and uses what works for them.

Well, unless someone has actually tried to palm the re-milled coins from both Lassen and Schoolcraft, they can't really answer my question.

I own only one from schoolcraft, many from Lassen. I have found palming with Todd's more comfortable and easier. They just seem to cling better.

I have a Lassen nonexpanded WL set (my go to set), and the remilling is perfect. Schoolcraft's may work as well, but I can't imagine that they can possibly work better.

My experience is the same with both Lassen and Kueppers re: unexpanded cling: GOOD
If you are planning on ordering something from Lassen (or anyone), just tell him that is one of the important points to you. It is also possible that if someone makes an unexpanded shell set from very soft coins, they might not - as a choice - make the re-milling too crisp so that the edges are in line with the softness of the rest of the coin. Of course, this may be considered 'going too far' :^) But you never know.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I own "shrunken, re-milled coins" from both makers and find no difference as far as "cling". I am using WL in both cases. I use CP, EG, Jw grip etc. Nothing different.

I have several re-miled coins from Lassen and they have an infinity edge (they are re-milled) They cling like a new coin. They fit the unexpanded perfectly.
The ones I have seen from others are not the same. They have a softer edge. Mobius |

Yes, it's a good thing to let the "custom" makers know exactly what your custom needs are. The Harada hold guys are definetely going to be having different requirements, I had a coin special made so I could practice that.
I know Lassen normally likes to make perfect little radius's on the edges after he remills them, but he can easily adjust the depth of the milling and sharpness of the edge for you clingy guys. A close inspection of his remilling shows he uses a specially made form tool that matches the specs of US minted coins, not just some V shaped tool like many of the others. He knows that because he used to work for the US Mint in Denver, where they make no paper currency, only coins. |

I need to adjust the assumptions of my initial post. For various reasons, I'm starting to conclude that the coins I purchased may be neither Lassen nor Schoolcraft. (Sigh.) I'm slowly learning just how complicated this area of magic props is. A person who has seen my coins think they may have been made years ago by Connie Hayden. The remilling back then was not as sharp, so that is the reason my coins don't palm as well as the Schoolcraft coins I saw at the convention. I guess the lesson here going forward is to go directly to either Lassen or Schoolcraft when buying these coins.
