Is there anyone out there performing ventriloquism without a dummy or hand puppet? Just solely using distant, muffled, echo-effect and telephone voice as an act?

I use a distant voice without puppets, but use a glass or bottle to trap the sound and then release it as an echo.
I think you still need a prop for that kind of act - just for misdirection, such as a portable trap door for distant voice, cone speaker & microphone for echo effect, telephone or wireless telephone or handphone or handytalkie for telephone voice, and bag or suitcase for muffled effect. Unless you talk to someone on the ceiling using distant voice, you just need to look up. But don't do that in an open space area. Hope this helps. Regards, Budi Ha Ha |

I do the human puppet routine after explaining that the airline lost my luggage and I don't have any puppets.
It always goes over well!

I saw a ventriliquist who got 2 volunteers, and when he put his hand on their heads, they would open and close their mouth while he put words in their mouths. There are many possibilities with this.

Sorry if I wasn't clear ... what Phil described is the human puppet routine.
If you ever get to see Ronn Lucas' mask routine it is also VERY funny.

Years ago there was a nice vent act that was making the rounds of USO shows for the military overseas (away from the USA). I was on the bill with the guy but cannot remember his name.
Anyway, his act was truly funny. He basically got into an argument with a heckler off stage. He was supposed to be doing a magic trick. The “fight” was hilarious. Unfortunately, many of the audience members did not know he was using ventriloquism skills and that there was no heckler. Many Ventriloquists in the past would talk to someone “upstairs” or on the phone (without even a prop phone), or locked in a trunk. In fact I saw one old timer who did a nice act, where he had apparently accidentally locked his wife in a small trunk. The panic and comedic byplay was priceless. The announcer would announce “Lou and Lucy the great Tango Dance Team”. Tango music would start and Lou would come on stage wearing his dance costume pulling the trunk. You could hear Lucy complaining and becoming hysterical inside. Part of the comedy was the fact that Lou was a bit overweight and his costume was almost bursting at the seams. He was in a panic, begging for help, she was screaming (muffled), complaining, and promising to do bodily harm to him (very descriptive!) when she got out (which made him reconsider letting her out! Only to have her get more hysterical!). He would tip up the trunk and it would fall over to her screams. And on and on. It was a fun 12 minutes! Finally, the trunk was opened and found empty. The guy told me he developed his act after having his figure stolen. The case had been left so he did his act using only the case. He decided that a small trunk would be a lot cheaper than a new figure. Go figure, eh? There is a long history of ventriloquists using few or no props to create their act.

Watch Wayne Dobson videos. He gets a volunteer and asks questions. When the volunteer replies, he simultanelously answers them using his vent voice. It's so funny.
