I do a Halloween show every year for the same group of friends and their kids, and I'm running out of material! Can you guys recommend some new tricks? Obviously they must require days not weeks of practice... So far I was thinking of the Vanishing Bandana, Chico... what else is great and can be picked up in a few days? Or should I recycle elements of my regular show?

Or should I recycle elements of my regular show? [/quote it's funny but if a prop is a different color or size as the same prop - kids don't remember the first one. Example: I used to carry two sets of linking rings and IF the kids called-out "We already saw that one" I'd ask 'OH... you've seen the 8 inch rings?" They 'Yes" Me "But did you see the 10 inch rings?" Then I exchanged the rings and proceeded. I did the same thing with a red and blue Die Box. I also have 4 different choppers / swords and because the props look different the show looks different - forget about the fact that it's basically the same routine. On a funnier (kinda) note: I knew a magician who switched the first three tricks with the last three tricks and advertised "Two Different Shows". He should have switched the entire first half with the second half, to make that claim credible!!!! Let's see who's buying that. All in favour... But to answer your question seriously, go get some new stuff that works like the old stuff but looks different.

I've only tried the bandana trick a few times, but a guy I know used to do it a lot, but said too many kids didn't seem to get the pun or know what a bandana is. Pressure is easy and cheap and you don't just need to use cell phones. Squared circle is easy and works well for me because I pull out funny stuff. Gag wands for kids around 7 and under. Balance a ping pong ball on your nose (but it's rubber cemented or double sided taped on your nose) and of course reveal the secret "by accident".

Yeah, don't do the Vanishing Bandanna, it's a lousy trick, and kids won't get it
Seriously though, there are a zillion tricks out there. Surely, you must have some ideas for routines you'd present as an alternative? It does rather depend on the age range of the kids - and your style, etc. Very difficult to suggest suitable material for your show, with no real information. For a start, you could let us know what they HAVE seen, so that we know which effects to discount. Jay had a good point - for instance, repeat shows for younger kids, I present "Blooming Flower", "Botania", "Flito Flower", etc....and I also use "Magic Painting", "Invisible Painting", "Colouring Book" (you all know I'm not a big fan of that one, so it's rarely in a show), "The Great painting Competition", "Picto Transpo", and several more effects which are all very similar, but different, and therefore acceptable as "new material". Most importantly, you should come up with new gags for your second and third shows. Potty |

Wow thanks all for the great advice, I'm listening carefully.
Here is a list from the last few years, except I wouldn't do all of this, some things get switched out depending on conditions: Parasol Production Applause Meter Tip Over Trunk --> kid appears Bubble Dream -- miser's dream with bubbles into a bucket Bigger Wands & Biggest Wand Die Box & Appearing / Disappearing Canes Multiplying Bottles Milk to Silk --> milk pitcher, funnel & confetti bucket, diminishing milk to silk Drawing Board Flying Carpet Zombie Square Circle We have a dwarf bunny these days, so I was looking at using Coco for an appearance / disappearance... |

I'd recycle old teabags before I would consider the bandana trick. It's as lazy as magic gets. Surely we are better than that?
Why not use your existing stock of tricks, but in new ways? Come up with new routines for existing stuff, and new patter. And I recommend adding a simple puppet routine.

Hi Tony I think puppets are great, I love characters, but I have not put in the time for ventriloquism.
I want a puppet routine that does some magic, too. Which leaves Chico and.... what? |

Al I was thinking the same thing!!
but I am confused here as every one is saying that the vanishing bandana trick is a loser! what! it was one of my favorites to perform and got the kids and adults screaming and laughing so hard. now maybe its the way you presented it that left things to be desired. I so wish I could still perform the bandana trick, how I miss it so much! just curious as to why you don't like it or think its a bust!?? sam

QWuote: I have not put in the time for ventriloquism.
I want a puppet routine that does some magic, too. You don't have to be a ventriloquist. If the kids are young and the setting is right, you should be able to get away with just holding the puppet up and using a slightly altered voice for it, in response to you speaking in ordinary voice. Main thing is to move the mouth of the puppet in synch with the word syllables. But, of course, the puppet on one of your hands means you have to do your magic one-handed [now there's a challenge], or have a child up on stage or the crowd to interact with, or put the puppet on its own little chair to watch you while you perform and then fit it on your hand to comment on your performance.
The presentation makes the magic.

Excellent idea Christopher.
Someone should give it a try, maybe not for a paying audience, but more during a magic club show or a private family show. To push this idea further this would mean to present the effects backwards aswell, have the music played backwards. The only problem will be the patter : Nobody would understand a word. So I guess this would more work for a silent 8 minutes act. Oliver. |

You'll find some good ideas for Halloween Magic when you visit a party store, then check out my "Magic With Themed Party Goods" from The Wizards' Journal #14. Not only will you be set for Halloween, but for any other season or theme which is featured in any Party Store. Takes paper cups, paper plates, napkins, and tablecloths on any theme or season and turns them into magic. I also recommend Eleazar's "Cauldron Capers" from the same Wizards' Journal #14, for a variety of ways to use those little plastic cauldrons that are in all the stores right now.
