Fellow magi,

I agreed to help my girlfriend's niece's birthday party today, while drinking a few glasses of wine last night. Usually, a kids show is no problem. I grab my kids show bag and my table and Poof!

Problem is... I'm 200 miles from that bag, and only have my closeup gear. Silver dollars (un gaffed), a flipper/shell half set, small chop cup, a few dog squeakers, a few jumbo coins, and cards.

Any ideas on something I can snag from the hardware store and use? Rocks for 2-in-the-hand?

Thanks!

Don't try to be inventive. If you have your closeup gear, go with a closeup performance. Trying to routine and perform "ideas" that someone on the internet suggests is a recipe for disaster. Just go with what you know. And, next time, drink a diet Coke. Smile

I'm with MichaelCGM,

You might think about your stand-up show and see if anything can be replicated.

"Grandmothers Necklace" can be "Rope Thru Body" which shows big. Many Rope effects don't rely on the quality of the rope too much.

I don't know the ages of the kids but Newspaper tree can be fun.

A bucket could help for misers dream, sounds like you may have the skill for that. Coins from ear if you don't have a bucket. If the kids are young they will all want a turn. Tossing an imaginary coin into a paper sack and being sad when the coins disappear?

Get a couple of kid friendly riddles off the internet.

Probably too late to help.

Good Luck!

I agree, don't be afraid to use the close up you have.
Kids will understand and enjoy it much more than you think.

There is a section of the Café called "Magic... at a moment's notice" (Close up Workers area), which is about impromptu magic. That might be a good forum for you to read through some past threads, for ideas.

In addition to magic, try basic balloon animals - swords are easy. You can get them and a pump from a party supply store. Also maybe some game leading depending on ages.

Just got back. Did:

Professors Nightmare (87 cents worth of rope from Home Depot)
Scotch & Soda
3-coin flurry
LOTS of jumbo coin work
Ambitious card + card to can
Squeaker-in-palm gag

Pretty short show, but they were 3-5 years old. Everyone loved it. I read through a dozen posts on here before I found reference to the Professor's Nightmare. Perfect addition!

This scenario is exactly the reason I wrote body tricks and put out a DVD.
A complete 1 hour show / workshop with nothing but the human body.

You can always do:

paper balls over the head
2-in-the-hand-one-in-the-pocket with whatever
cups and balls (1,2 or 3 cups)
billiard balls
cards (kids love a great card trick.... just like anyone else. don't b.s. yourself. Hate to be the one to tell you but it's... "the proverbial you" that's boring; not the cards.)
signed quarter to ball of yarn (see the fitzkee book on misdirection)
misers dream
signed bill/billet/whatever to balloon
a rope trick
TT or DT routines making your own TT or DT

I'm pretty sure I could replicate my stand-up act at the local drugstore in and hour if I had to.
I'd have to fashion my own: TT, DT, and mouthcoil; all of which are pretty darn easy.
