I just ran across that one month old paper:
http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2011/sep......cities-/ Is it really that serious? |

It depends who you ask, just like anywhere else. Some are having a rough time, some arent. I would say the majority of construction people and related businesses are definetly sufferng. Probably the worst in the country in that respect as all the big projects are shut down and no new homes are being built, so theres an awful lot of people out of work. A lot of outside businesses have also felt the effects also, restaurants, bars, which can be related to the construction slowdown also. I would say its tough for sure although its not affecting me per se, but its tough.

It's terrible. I'm currently in the job hunting game and Vegas just has nothing to even look at, nevermind apply for.

Well... I was in Vegas a few weeks ago and it seemed all good to me. But that doesn't mean much, as an outsider looking in. Great place, it'll certainly be getting my business again .

I was talking from job perspectives, people living there, etc. Not from the tourists side .
What I understand is that it's tough. Here in UK it's hard too, I'm gonna leave England for the same reasons. Basically, no job at all. It looks like that for more and more people here the main income comes from benefits... One day, all this is gonna end in a very bad way. Our politicians are blind (or at least disconnected with reality) and ruin our economies at light speed. As long as they got their salaries... |

Yes things aren't the best here nor is it much of anywhere else in the U.S. but there are jobs here if one really wants to look for them. I'm looking for work as well. It's tough yes because there are so many looking and often times by the time that you get an application turned in if there was a job opening it's already been filled. But don't believe everything the news media says. The media loves to hype up the bad side of Vegas and gloss over much that isn't wrong with the area. Our own local news media does that constantly here. Of course if you come here looking for work as a magician you're going to have even a harder time of it finding work doing that. It's always been that way Here. Even when Cesar's Magical Empire was open and there were more venues using magicians at the time. It wasn't even easy to find work as a magician here. So in that regard sure Vegas is going to be terrible. |

Building construction in vegas is dead.

It may be dead for now but it won't be forever. There is construction going on. in fact there is a large hotel or condo building that is still being worked on on the north end of Las Vegas BLVD granted there isn't as much growth here as in the past but again anyone that is not actually here does not know what they are talking about. Just knowing someone from here or if you lived here for even two months or more does not count. If you don't live here or do live here but don't get out and actually see what is going on here. You have no clue as two what it is really like here period.

Even at it's peak Vegas was often at the top of "most stressfull cities to live in" lists.
Closer to home, my Uncle was recently transferred back to Vegas from Seattle for work. So at least one person I know works in Vegas.

Here in Northern Nevada the work picture is the worse in the country. The companies don't want to hire and if they do they want to hire qualified people because they want to pay min. wage for jobs that use to pay much better.

The southwest as a whole is in a pretty miserable state right now compared to the rest of the United States. Part of the trouble that Vegas has is that not only are things not great in Nevada, but Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and California are in pretty dire straits as well. We're in a fairly fluid region. People are willing to migrate around the Southwest for work and aren't tied necessarily to any one state or city. That migration has been much greater in the past few years. Here in Tucson things aren't as bad as they could be, but a lot of that is because people have left for Phoenix, Las Vegas, Albuquerque and California. At the same time, people are constantly migrating in as well to take jobs that the local economy doesn't have the skill set to support. I myself am in the job market now since I'm finishing up law school this year and need to find work to pay those terrible loans, and I'm looking in Vegas as well as a number of other places, but the prospects there do seem significantly worse than they have been in recent years.

In the same news the front page of the Las Vegas Review Journal actually for Today Sat Oct22 2011 has an article and it says that construction for Aug and Sept in Vegas has risen. So there you go. You can look up the article. Since Vegas is the "Worst" I'm doing my part and being too lazy to post a link for you all.

Should have never let it go as far as it did, but that's another story. The Strip boom started with the closing of the Marina and the building of the new MGM and that lasted till a few years ago. Now we have all these empty shells on the strip that were supposed to be luxury condos, lol. I don't care what anyone says, I miss the old Strip. |

Or what they do know isn't often all that much on the situation. |

I get your point RS1963, but frankly, whatever the side your are on, it looks to me (thru websites, newspapers, private mails, etc.) that Vegas isn't in great shape though. Construction for August and September you say, OK, but it's just two months. You need longer periods to get a more fair/honest idea. 14% unemployment, for instance, is an impressive number. When reading papers like that:
http://www.vegasinc.com/news/2011/aug/22......st-dawn/ you'll understand I don't see Vegas the way you depict it. That's why I wanted advice from people living there because newspapers are just newspapers. |

Arnold, no matter the situation of our economy, Vegas will be back - if it ever left. People will always want to have fun. Even in times of economic downturn, "sin stocks" still do well. People want their booze, cards and neeked women to take their mind off losing their jobs..
How are things over there?
