Hi, I was just wondering if these tricks were OK to perform in my school:
I was wondering if I should do the Pen Through Tongue in my classes? Or float things. Can I have some advice please? Thanks |

Hey DBZ,
If you have an interest in money, as I am sure you do, money effects are killer on school students. When I was in high school, sponge balls, cards, coins, all kinds of stuff really caught the eye of my peers. If I were you, I would not do pen thru tongue (at school at least), I mean, how are you gonna impress the girls that way? Stay away from any and all fire magic. I think you would be ending up in the principal's office. Cards are iffy. They can sometimes be mistaken for gambling purposes. I always got into trouble if I had a pack of cards with me at school. So I think it would be safe if you learned some really good coin and bill material. Besides, if someone tries to take your lunch money, you can vanish it and show them they're out of luck. But ultimately, use your best judgement. If cards are okay, by all means, use them. |

I don't like performing in my school because all my friends will just want to spoil the trick and make me look bad. I try to keep my magic very quiet in my life.

What about Crazy Man's Handcuffs?
Or do money tricks when I'm waiting in line in the Caféteria? |

Do some bill transpositions for your friends but I agree with pyrodevil. At school kids mess with your props. I remember that I would always hate performing for my little cousins because they would be grabby and get my stuff all greasy and whatnot. But if you decide to do tricks at school make sure there are some that can be examined if asked because kids at my school don't think it's too good of a trick unless they can see what's left of it. Use tricks that leave you clean at the end.

Adam, floating or moving things with your mind are always interesting, but make sure you practice these well before doing them, especially in school. And when you float things make sure you are at a distance from those watching so they can't just run their hands through what you're doing and ruin it.
Have you heard of Loops? Try those. And call me weird, but I think pen through tongue is interesting for you to show to a select few and let them just talk about how this kid Adam put a pen through his tongue. But use your judgement and don't do anything stupid that will get you into trouble. Keep it light and have fun! :comply:

Adam,
I think money effects would go over great. Plus, if you learn various slights you can start to make up your own routines which will give you a lot more possibilities. Be careful with cards, because most schools have rules about having playing cards with you. Also watch if you're floating things because kids will try to spoil the effect just for laughs. Students can be a very challenging audience to entertain. Try your best to do the effect in a situation where someone can't spoil it for you. Good luck! |

First off it's "crazy man's handcuffs" and to answer your question, misled is a great trick to perform at school, I do this all the time.

Hmmm I carry a card deck all the time, including at school. I've never gotten in trouble but you should check the rules first.

Given your environment, with teenagers who can be grabby and often look to trip up a performer who is their own age, I would stay away from any gaffed items and rely on sleight of hand. Crazy Man's Handcuffs would be great, but you really have to get it right before you start showing it.

Thanks everyone for your advice.
I really wouldn't float things around because people tend to put their hand around the object causing the IT to brake. Also I use marked cards and I just say I'll predict your mind and after I reveal their card, I get good feedbacks. |

Dbzkid999,
I concur with not doing the "pen through tongue" bit at school. Add to that any of the geek trick genre such as "Needle Through the arm" or such. The extreme nature of such tricks will bring you rapidly under the scrutiny of school officials and teachers, to say nothing for the smart alecks that might catch you unprepared and hand you an ungimmicked prop, demanding to "see it again". Pyrodevil, Try adding a sucker illusion or two to your repertoire. They tend to act as a retardant to those folks that like to heckle. Also, don't keep your magic quiet...just choose a more appreciative audience. Friends are the toughest to perform for but that can be an advantage if you really want to find out if all of that practice and preparation paid off. Blessin's, Bear

Don't worry, I don't think I'll do the pen through tongue but I think I'll do the Scotch And Soda or something.
Hey! I was thinking, when my teacher gives me a stencil in class, what if I do the Pen Through Paper then restore the paper? What do you think? |

I do pretty much everything I know. Most of my stuff is close up or street routines. I also do some manipulation.

But is it a good idea to do the pen through paper then restore it?

I just do my normal street routine but make sure that it is okay that you use cards in class. Most of my teachers are cool about it but you can get in trouble. Fortunately the assistant principal really likes my magic so if I get in trouble for using cards I talk to him. This might work if you knew a really nice teacher.
Another cool effect is if you get a detention and you have the piece of paper you could do a pen through the dollar routine. That seems to catch the teachers' attention. |

Do not perform fire tricks. It's dangerous. The fire alarm can work on...
Equal/unequal ropes are a great effect for children. |

I would suggest learning some sleight of hand and not rely so heavily on gimmicked items. A marked deck will get you burned every time if you're not extremely careful.
I'd really suggest starting over from scratch and taking it slow. Learn the basics and you will be fooling your friends in just a few short months. Judging from your current track record (by your other posts) your rep at school is not that of a magician. (This is the voice of experience. I used to take an appearing cane to school and in that venue, the only way to not get caught was to not do it but once a month. Kids DO talk.)
