I enjoy making lists. The current list is the five books that most significantly impacted my development as a reader, and whose techniques still influence every reading I give. What would be yours?
1. Everything-Gene Nielsen 2. Masks of Tarot-Scott Grossberg 3. The Vitruvian Square-Scott Grossberg 4. The Palm Reader's Notebook-Ron Martin 5. ??? |

I am glad someone else has mentioned Julian Moore, as I was about to do so myself. His writings are all very instructive and illuminating.

The Man Who Was Magic, Paul Gallico. It is a children's story, but it gives you the idea of what a magician should be - and what he/she shouldn't.

I'm not an expert reader but here my two cents:
Essential: - Invisible Readings (Enriquez) - Everything of Jerome Finley (in The Farewell Book, in particular, there is a system that will become, along with Invisible Readings, my ONLY reading system) To complete: - The Dance (Henderson) - Palm Readings In Your Own Words (Moore) - Cool Reading (Gene Nielsen) - Reader of Mind (Voodini) - Vitruvian Square (Grossberg) I wish I had had all of this ten years ago. |

At the risk of appearing pretentious I would have to say the big game changer for me was Robert Anton Wilson's Prometheus Rising - it helped me through the period when I went from a devout 'shut-eye' to an 'open-eye'(?) reader
(And when I say 'helped me through' I mean it pushed me out of the door at 30,000 feet, only showing me the parachute cord at the last possible second before I crashed into a solipsistic pile of mind goo!) More along the line of the OP it would have to be Neal Scryer's black book for reminding me that SIMPLE AND DIRECT WORKS!
He is a liar. The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological and powerful. So don't listen to him. Remember that - do not listen
