Looks like I am gonna be in trouble when I get back to work!
Let me explain the situation: I work at my church, which also has a private school on the same property. So I do work for both the church and the school. Now at work we have these two carts. One is an orange cart and the other is a golf cart (gas powered) that we use to drive around the property and do our work (the current developed land is six acres while there is another 10 that is a big field). Anyway I started working there in the summer of 2002. After a few weeks I was allowed to drive the carts and I drove them for well over a year. Well this summer we had another employee (he doesn't have a license) and he was caught by our senior pastor driving the cart. We didn't know he wasn't allowed to drive them so no one said anything. Because of this our senior pastor told us all that if we don't have a license, we don't drive the carts. I have my driving permit and get my license in November but he didn't care. His rule was solid. SO everything went well during the summer but it seemed like he had it out for my friend and I. We kept getting in trouble over little things and it made me really begin to rethink if I should continue working there. Now to bring you to today. It was a BUSY day. The school had a couple activites planned around 4:00 (I am suppossed to be clocked-out at 4:30). There is a sleepover for the girls in the Jr. High group tonight, and we are having a huge b-b-q on Sunday afternoon. On top of that our landscaper was putting in new plants today in front of the sanctuary. So on top of our regular work (cleaning up the grounds and everything after school) we had to help with the plants and get everything ready for the other events. This gave us a crazy workload. Well two of our guys left early (they came in at 7:00 a.m.). So it left myself and our new guy that just started on Tuesday. As I was going through the school and taking out all the trash in the class rooms I looked at my watch and it said 3:55 P.M.!!! Uh-oh! I still had at least another hour, hour and a half of work if I have to walk everywhere! (Walking bags of trash all the way across the property is not a quick process by anymeans). So I reasoned with myself and came to the conclusion that the only way to finish at the time I am suppossed to clock out at is if I drive one of the carts. None of the pastors were there and it was just me and the new guy (who happend to still be busy helping put in new plants). So I went and grabbed a cart and went to finish my job. After I finished the trash I parked the cart and started racing around to do everything else. Once I was done I looked at my watch again 4:28. p.m. UH-OH!!! We have to finish locking up and go clock-out! I grab my buddy and tell him that it's time to go but first we must lock up. So we both hop in a cart (second time for me! oops!) and as we are getting ready to drive up to the back a person from the school comes over and says they need a hose, (they are having a party and rootbeer floats get MESSY). So I go grab a hose and take it over to them. I drive up and lock everything up in the back. We walk down to go clock-out. On the way there my friend sees some people in the courtyard and asks if I could clock him out too. I said sure no problem. So I go upstairs, clock us both out. Say good-bye to him and leave. Which brings me to tonight. There is a Bible study at my friend's house. Well my friend happens to be the son of our senior pastor! UH-OH! So I go over there and while there we start talking about different things. Somehow the conversation got on about work and I casually mention I clocked the new guy out (it went along with our conversation). My friend's dad looks at me and says, "You NEVER do that again. You know the rules." He didn't sound happy at all (funny thing, I never heard of a rule not to clock him out if he said it was OK). Well we have the study and everything and we walk into the house (we were in the backyard). My other friend (who goes to the school) looks at me and says, "Hey! I saw you driving the carts today!" "What? I wasn't driving them...I am not allowed to remember?" "...Oh yeah duh! I got you and Marcuss confused!" That whole conversation happend with our pastor in the kitchen we were standing right next to. He didn't look to happy with me for the next 20 minutes I was there. I seriously expect to not have a job when I get back to work! Chris |

I wouldn't even do the job without not having the use of the carts, you don't need a license to drive them. Only if you are a public road...

Okay here's my thoughts:
It seems a silly rule, true, that you are not allowed to drive the carts but the point here is two things:
Here's what I would do and this is only a suggestion, only you can decide what your are going to do. I would go in and see him and tell him you want to clarify things with him. Tell him you heard about the rule regarding clocking someone out and wanted to make sure this was true. (The other dad may tell him and approaching him first will show responsibilty.) Explain to him about the busy day and well here's where this is strickly up to you I would confess you rode the cart and tell him the reasons why. (Again, this is up to you but as there were a lot of people there it may get back to him that you did ride it so went against his wishes.) Believe it or not, when you've messed up and admit it, people have more respect for you than if you try to cover it up. These are only my opinions, again, it's your choice as to what to do. If you came to me, however, and approached me first and told me what you had done I would respect you for being honest. Lastly, I realize from your story that you got off at 4:30 and felt that you HAD to take the cart in order to get off on time. The clockwatchers - those that feel that their time is up and regardless if their work is finished feel compelled to leave right on the min. I'm not saying people should work overtime for free and not get paid for it. What I am saying is it's usually noticed by bosses those employees that continuously work hard and the rare occasion put in a few extra minutes and not complain about it. I think you showed responsibility by doing the work (getting the hose for the customer, knowing it would make you late) instead of saying, "Sorry my time is up." Your mistake was taking the cart, regardless of how silly that rule seems to you. Anyway those are my thoughts...yikes it was the teacher in me that answered this question and made me sound a bit goody goody but truthfully I never care what a student has done (I usually work at inner city schools) so I hear a lot of stuff far worse than yours. People respect you when you tell the truth. So that was my thoughts and best of luck. Let us know how it turned out for you. |

You work in a church...you broke the rules...then you lied to cover it up? Um...forgive me, but something doesn't seem right here.
It doesn't matter if you don't need a license to drive the carts or not. If it was against "company" policy, well, that would be considered grounds for dismissal. There could be some sort of liability issue with who is allowed to drive the cart and who is not. As for clocking the other person out, that could be considered an honest mistake. By the way...I work in a church, too! If I am told something that I am not supposed to do—like give out the pastor's cell phone number even when it's an emergency—I better make sure I don't ever do it! Rules are rules, and if you break the rules, you best be prepared to deal with the consequences! Margarette
The only stupid question is the one not asked.

I have a friend who worked at a local university. He has been banned from driving the golf carts because he was JUMPING them over piles of dirt. ;->
He eventually drove one through a window and his golf cart driving days ended. Point of this story is...it could be worse. ;-> See ya, Gambit242 |

Well I go back to work on Monday. I know what I did was completely wrong and I did feel terrible.
Monday I will see how everything works out. I know something will happen. I explained everything to my parents. They asked me why I did it and I explained that is was 10:30 on Friday night and I wasn't in the mood to get yelled at again. (During the course of the summer I got in trouble about six times or so. For things that weren't even worth wasting a breath on. There are a few people around there that don't care for me so I will leave it at that.) Thanks for the responses everyone. I will see how it goes! Chris |

I forgot to mention this earlier. The reason I fel (as my co-workers do also) that we must clock out at 4:30 is because we have gotten in trouble for working overtime.
They are SUPER SUPER picky aroudn there. There were times when my friend would have to work until 4:45 and when he would get his check (which is when the bookeeper would look at our time cards) he would get in trouble for working extra time. Chris |
