My eldest informs me that she and her cohorts at the University of Alberta Make Poverty History group will be "reverse trick or treating" tomorrow. They will go door-to-door saying "Trick or Treat" then will give the lucky homeowner some fair trade chocolate and tell them a little bit about why fair trade is important.
I think that this is pretty cool. What do you think? Is it a cool idea? How do you feel about fair trade products? John

Reverse trick or treating.
JesusWeen. http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/TopStories/201......-111029/ http://jesusween.com/ Whatever happened to a good, old fashioned, simple celebration of witchcraft, ghosts, and ghouls?

I'm not sure if it's a trick or a treat. They get some chocolate but they have to listen to a lecture on someones pet cause to get it?

Reverse Trick or Treating should be dressing up as a confused, old person, wait for kids to come by your house, and when they say "Trick or Treat", take a piece of candy from them, say thank you, and close the door.

I heard of guys offering chocolate to kids out of beat up old vans. I don't know if it was fare trade chocolate or if the kids had to listen a lecture or not....

Apparently they give the chocolate, say that it is fair trade and where fair trade products are available and ask if they would like to know move. If not, they move on. It's less hassle than many people put the kids through to get their chocolate. John

Whatever happened to just enjoying something and not shoving all sorts of causes into it? I want halloween to be left alone. Let the kids have fun, and more importantly let me have fun giving them candy and having a good laugh at the clever costumes. I'll worry about fair trade chocolate when the price goes up so high because of the cost of doing fair trade that I have to give the kids popcorn balls instead of chocolate.

Sadly, more often than not, fair trade isn't. In most cases it does not provide any more profit to the farmer, nor does is it organic, or better for the environment or help the economy of impovrished nations. Most often it is just a way to charge more and make a profit playing on peoples interest/ need to feel they are doing something good... It is usually no better than any chocolate, or chocolate companies. There arw some rare exceptions, but sadly they are few and far between.

"Causes" have been attached to holidays for a long time. Trick or Treat for Unicef, Easter Seals, Salvation Army bell-ringers, Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon. It really shouldn't rattle anyone's cage, unless you let it.

She said she had a good night. One person was bothered by their presense and didn't want to talk. Most were polite. And a handful said that they had never heard of fair trade and asked for more information.
When she got home we had a nice family evening watching Trick R Treat. John
