Hey guys,
it is a reveal of a selected card on the king of hearts....you take the king and peel its chest apart in a superman fashion thus revealing a number... then on its back there is the suit! Simple but looks so different. Enjoy |

Despite that the actual trick isn't much to talk about, there is one interesting aspect.
The custom printed King isn't switched out, but is shown openly before the effect with the final image in clear view. I'm curious to know how well that part works, as it might be connected to inattention blindness (as in the Gorilla experiment, and in Paul Harris' "Headache" ). If anyone has bought it, please give some input on this particular bit. |

Tom,
Having watched Chris perform this I'd say that's exactly what he is going for here. I think the hope is that the design of the card will not be noticed by your average spectator who simply takes for granted that playing cards, and in particular court cards, have a busy, colourful design. So, only when attention is drawn to 'pulling' the shirt open to reveal the value do they think - "That must just have happened, I'd have noticed otherwise." Ergo, magic has taken place. Of course, whether or not the card has been designed well enough for the above effect to take root is another matter and for each performer to decide for his or herself. Personally, I noticed straight away that something was amiss with the King but then, I look at playing cards every day, so... There's definitely something interesting in the idea of allowing one revelation to hide in plain site, thereby allowing a second revelation to occur on the back. Normally, this type of effect is restricted to only one side of the card being magically changed in some way because the back design (or the face, depending on the effect) is reserved for the necessary camouflage to ring the card in. I think Chris deserves some points for this. Also, it occurred to me that some kind of play on words regarding the fact that playing cards, like people, have 'backs' and 'faces' may provide a presentational anchor to make the back revelation more surprising... "And if you think pulling his shirt open is impressive, d'you remember I showed you the 'back' of this playing card earlier? Well, take a look at his back now!" If the spectator was holding the card at this point, this could prove quite strong. And, perhaps it might be prudent to 'miss' a couple of times, pulling a few 'wrong' cards out then 'randomly selecting' one for the revelation. The hope being that this would fog the issue of the irregular design more. So, they definitely saw the gaff card, but they also saw a few others too and hopefully this would provide a little more distraction. It's not exactly my cup of tea but I don't necessarily think this trick constitutes a 'bad' idea either. It's definitely bold and sometimes you need to be bold in order to get anywhere. Dave.

I actually didn't notice that the king is specially printed before he called attention to it.

Not so good as a magic, not so bad as a simple little trick
